Testing some new image sizes...
500 px, my normal size: (usually about 60-80kb in file size)

550px: (usually about 80-100kb in file size)

600px: (usually about 100-120kb in file size)

Which size do you like best?
The 600 pixel images are quite a bit larger in file size than the 500 pixel ones I normally post, so if I went with that, I'd probably end up cutting down on images a bit. I wouldn't want to get into trouble with bandwidth again. But a lot of people seem to be using the larger sizes, and I'm jealous, lol!
Also, if you don't mind, maybe have a look back at any random story post (here, this one has a lot of pictures in it), and let me know if you think the 500px images still look okay with the 600px layout? I don't keep all of my original screenshots, so the ones that are already done in 500px (and there are a lot!) would have to stay that way.
I just love these kids though. I went into their lot for a second, and this was how I found them, some random Thursday night in December, all dancing in their living room.
And note that Lucy is wearing her engagement ring at home here. I have no idea what changed so that she started wearing it (in-game, I mean), but there it is. Weird glitches are fascinating sometimes.
I'm a fan of big images, but I think the best size for this blog is the middle one.
ReplyDeleteActually though, any of the sizes look fine, which is probably not the decisiveness you wanted to here, lol! ;)
I just love the Harris kids, with all that goofiness they have!
Let's see if this works again...ahem!
ReplyDeleteI like the 550px since it has a nice amount of space on either side. Can't really give more explenation than that...
I would take the 500px or the 550 px. The other one might be too big.
ReplyDeleteBut then, I am on my work, secretly reading your blog, on a tiny screen someday.
Or I print it out to read on the train (I think I am your biggest fan ;-) ) and then I shrink the images anyway. Because, you know, that makes printing out just half that much. Besides, I love pictures, but more as a support of the storyline, and not to gaze at for hours to see if there might be an interesting detail in the background.
So, maybe you can make your decision on what you think is (most) important. Of course, it is delightful to see the faces these little Sims make and the details of there make-up and such; but is it important enough to use that much bandwidth ? The pictures a, in my eyes a HUGE addition to the story, but then, they are “just” an addition.
I like the 500px images. The 600px images are so wide that it's hard to look at the whole thing at once.
ReplyDeleteHow do you change the default picture size in blogger? My images are really small (400px).
Funny how much a difference 50 pixels make! I prefer the middle one.
ReplyDeleteThough I'm okay with less pictures too.
I'm jealous of all the beautiful large pictures I see on blogs too. I can't just up and change my column width at wordpress though without paying. :/
ReplyDeleteI vote for the second one, the white space was also my reason. It sort of frames the image, it's not too large to be distracting in itself, and the white space brings your eye right into the photo. So there's my rambly reason behind my vote.
I say the 550. They're better than the 500, but you said that you'd have to cut back on pictures if you used the 600, and I like the pictures just as much as the stories. Granted, if there were less pictures, it would probably take less time to do updates, seeing as there would be less staging of shots, so either the 550 or the 600, I say.
ReplyDeleteI think the middle size works the best. Mine are the largest, I think, but my blog is a lot 'younger' than yours - so far, I've only used about 2% of my Picasa account so I'll deal with bandwidth problems if/when they arise in future. As for yours, I like the biggest ones, but I think the middle size is a nice compromise.
ReplyDeleteLove the engagement ring thing! There's a story in there... :)
This is interesting. I use the 600px width for my blog because the smaller ones look too small, but I think I agree with some of the others here that the 550px looks the perfect size for your blog.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's the setup that makes the difference, my text column is wider and I also use widescreen shots (which means they aren't as high), so my 600px shots probably only take up as much of the page as your 500px.
Ouch, I've just looked at my file sizes and they usually average around 175-200kb per! If I ever actually get a decent following of readers I might have to start rethinking my pics :D
The middle size looks fab!
ReplyDeleteAll, Oh wow, do we all actually agree on a vote for something??? Amazing! lol! So it looks like everybody likes the 550 across, so we'll go with that one then.
ReplyDeleteI did actually just widen the posting column, by the way. It used to be that the 500 would fill up the whole posting space from side to side. I agree with you all that the white space looks nice though, so I'll keep it.
Thanks for your input, everyone! I'm glad it's going to be so easy to make you all happy!
Shake, aren't they such goofballs? lol! I love them!
Rome, good enough explanation for me! :)
Simphaesis, awww, how sweet! I love that you guys enjoy this enough to read it at work or on the train - thank you! :)
Sarah, the biggest picture Blogger will do if you're using the Blogger tools is 400px. If you want anything bigger than that, you'll have to put the image code into your post yourself. Most hosting platforms have a spot where you can grab the code - or if you know how, you can just code it yourself with the URL.
Lunar, yes, 50px makes quite a difference. Isn't that mathematical or something? Because you get more space in total area, 50px-squared? I'm too tired to remember if that's right - it's probably not, lol!
Maisie, that was a very thoughtful and convincing argument there ;) I agree!
Katherine, oooh, yes, less pictures would probably make for a less stressful update, lol! Not too many less though ;)
Blackcat, trust me, I'd plan ahead for bandwidth and space issues ahead of time if you can, if you plan on going long-term with this hobby. Because let me tell you, it's HELL to go through years worth of posts and re-code everything, lol! Seriously pain in the butt! I still have about a year's worth of archived posts to get through.
Illandrya, do you save your images for web? I don't know if all photo-editing programs have it, but Photoshop has a "save for web" option, and it really saves a ton of space in the end! And the pictures look just as nice as the originals.
Rad, looks like it's unanimous! :)
Thanks everyone!
Hmmm... definitely not a fan of the 600, but I rather like the 550. It would take a little bit of getting used to, but it offers a little bit more to the eye than the 500.
ReplyDeleteAwww, you can't not love the Harris kids :) Lucy had better tell her parents soon though, if she's getting more comfortable with wearing that ring around the house ;)
I'm late to the party but I would have voted for 550 too, so I guess it doesn't matter. ;)
ReplyDeleteLucy must be trying to tell you something, Laura!
I like the larger size. 550 px seems about right for your blog. These are some great pics!
ReplyDeleteTessa, I think maybe there is a point of being too big sometimes. Yes, that 600 is kind of overwhelming.
ReplyDeleteCarla, I think maybe she might be ;)
Beth, thanks! And to think when I started, I was posting little 400px across things, lol!
