A tiny little mini-story, about a new shirt:

But he tried on the shirt, and he felt immediately ridiculous in it. He loved it, but not on him. He would love it, on a poster, on a coffee cup, on a calendar, or on somebody else's shirt. Somebody else should wear this shirt, somebody younger and less aware of life's great tragedies. Someone like Piper. Someone like he was, before everything else happened. Because this shirt reminds him of being ten, and playing Space Invaders under a flannel blanket, and the smell of chicken soup.
"You're not that old," she says.
He's not. He's only thirty-four. "I'm old enough," he says. "I'm getting there."
Her smile is playful. "So wear it," she says. "Because today is the youngest you'll ever be for the rest of your life."
He wasn't sure if it made sense, but at the same time, it made perfect sense. So he wore it.
*******
I love this one. Somehow, Paper makes him "alive" besides feeling younger too.
ReplyDeleteAwww! I noticed that shirt in the previous entry, and was all, "is that Space Invaders?"
ReplyDeleteI love Hayden. He's such a friendly guy on the surface, but he's got so much hidden underneath.
Cute, charming, funny, saying so much about this couple and their relationship while describing a shirt - loved it! I've soooo done that staying up late to play and calling in sick the next day thing ... my bad :)
ReplyDeleteOh, crap, Blogger seems to have ate my comment!
ReplyDeleteTrying again... (and telling you this, in case the first one does show up as well :) )...
This is cute! But somehow, I actually found Piper's line a bit ominous - "today is the youngest you'll ever be..." - if you equate being older with knowledge of life's tragedies...
I can't imagine Piper ever thinking about it that way, though, and I guess Hayden hasn't, either... am still thinking about what that says about me... :)
M.J., thanks, she's just what he needs, I think. :)
ReplyDeleteLunar, yes, Space Invaders!!! I saw that shirt, and I was like, OMG Hayden! lol!
Hayden breaks my heart sometimes - when I'm in his head, it's like he's lived five lives and he feels about a hundred years old, lol! Poor guy.
Illandrya, thank you! I hoped it would speak for them. LOL, I certainly did my fair share of that too, especially in college!
Blackcat, ahhh, no, I didn't intend that. And I couldn't imagine Piper thinking something like that ever, lol! I think the "for the rest of your life" part is key here ;)
Awww, such a cute little tale.
ReplyDeleteI hope someone makes that shirt for TS3.
Aw. This was adorable. So much said, just with a shirt!
ReplyDeleteI just love Piper. She's so bright and positive. I imagine Hayden would feel pretty old with a daughter in college. I forget he's so young sometimes.
This is so adorable. And he is not old, you are as old as u feel...so you can be 15 even if you are 70 :) Well thats at least what i think.
ReplyDeleteThese two are so cute together....Piper is so good for him. I am excited about their new house and new life together, and I'm curious about what kind of wedding Piper will want. :)
ReplyDeleteRad, thanks! Isn't that shirt awesome!? I saw it and I just couldn't resist!
ReplyDeleteCarla, these kind of stories just keep popping up out of almost nothing, lol! Not that I'm complaining or anything ;)
I know, he's had so much life in his thirty-four years!
Speechless, well if Hayden is as old as he feels, he'd be about 65, lol! Poor guy! But really, I totally agree. Maybe Piper can prove it to him one of these days.
Rachel, she's really just what he needs. I'm glad he finally took the chance on it. And I'm starting to pick at ideas for her wedding - it'll be unique, if nothing else ;)
