November 2082 (part 1 of 2) - Berjes and Hailey Monif are 37, Hazel is 13. (Fiona McCullough is 15, Robbie is 12, Liza Hathe is 13, Angelo Shaw is 12, Isaiah Gavigan is 14.) Last update, December 2081.

She isn't too old yet. She isn't even forty. She still has her figure, only slight wrinkles at her eyes, she covers her few gray hairs quite well. She still has some spirit left in her, deep down, maybe tucked safely between her toes. She still has a small bit of hope.

Three months ago, she asked for a trial separation. She asked him to move out. Their therapy sessions were filled with bitterness and angst. Mariah said at this point, the separation couldn't hurt. The quiet might give them the space they need to reconnect. Mariah is even at a loss. She doesn't know what other advice she can offer anymore.

***

Hazel says, "I know, Mom."

The small income she brings in from her first novel is negligent when it comes to raising a teenager.

Maybe redecorating the office would help. She needs to figure something out, because she never liked actually working for a living. She only just started working again and already she wants to stay home.

Besides that, she'd like to see Hazel eating well still. No reason to let their diets go to waste. So she stocks up on fresh organic produce, and freshly-caught fish. She's stumped. Is a green summer squash the same thing as a zucchini? Which have more antioxidants, the green or the purple grapes? She doesn't even realize that Hazel has found some old friends and run off to greet them.

"Hey, Hazel," he says. He's drumming a tune on his leg, which is a little weird. She doesn't remember him being so weird. Robbie moved to Bluewater a couple years ago and it's been forever since she saw him. His sister is there, and a quiet dark-haired girl who seems to want to burn a hole through Hazel's head with her eyes.
Hazel says, "I thought you moved to China or something! What happened? Why did you guys move out here?" Truthfully, maybe Hazel had a bit of a childhood crush on Robbie, with his friendly smile, baby blonde hair, and big brown eyes.
Fiona and "the dark-haired girl" turn away and start to giggle about something. Hazel never got along with Fiona, and it looks like she's not about to start any time soon.

Liza's voice turns catty in a way she's never experienced before, and she says, "What, now they're like, in love? They're gonna get married an have a bunch of smelly babies?"

Fiona sighs dreamily. "I love Charlie."
Liza says, "You're a traitor!"

This is shocking to Fiona, and she says, "Oh my, what?"
Robbie is thinking, Whoa, she's holding my hand! She's totally holding my hand!
"You can bring your sister if you want," Hazel says. "And... that girl."
Liza officially hates her, for the record.

Liza tries not to grin too big. She fails miserably.
"Oh, right," Hazel says. "I didn't know." She backs away and goes to find her mom.

A pity non-date, Hazel is thinking, and with two girls who hate her. Oh God, at what point does she get to crawl in a hole and die?

Hazel says, "Mom, none of these stupid boys want to date me."
"That's because they're stupid boys," Hailey says. The bitterness is involuntary, and she worries that she'll turn her daughter bitter as well.
Hazel is just at that age now that she wants to know everything about dating. She finds boys mysterious and exciting. She's maybe even too excited about dating, always rattling on about some boy or another. When she grows up, Hailey hopes she'll take her time dating, that she'll be picky, that she won't be rushed or settle. Even then, there are still no promises.

Hailey doesn't get good vibes from this boy. But they're just skating after all, they are chaperoned.
But first, let's get a close-up on Natty-patty in the background there...

Step up, Fiona, that little snap and sway isn't gonna cut it. Fiona says, "What? I don't want to get sweaty."

She giggles. "It's glitter," she says. "It's supposed to be there."
To be honest, he kind of knew that. He just wanted to touch her cheek.

Hailey is still watching. Eyes like a hawk!

They say in unison, with stars in their eyes, "No, we're not."

She just laughs with him, for a moment. All they have is a moment before Angelo comes back, commanding her attention.

Natty says to Charlie, "Oooh, do you see what Hazel's doing?" He does, of course. They're going to tease her about this for weeks!
Hailey is wondering, how or when or even if she should break it to the poor girl that this probably isn't going to work out? Or at least, Hailey hopes it doesn't work out with this one. As happy as Hazel is in this moment, it won't last. She'll only be disappointed, again and again, probably. One small disappointment after another, until finally the disappointment is so great that it breaks her heart. Hailey doesn't know what to teach her, when all she knows is that even when you're sure it's going to work out, not all stories end happily with the storybook wedding.

They have a late dinner when they get home. Hazel cooks for them, and her expertise at the moment is macaroni and cheese.

"Why don't we talk about violin lessons," Hailey says.

It isn't that late though, not even midnight. Hazel knows this because Lucy Harris lives across the street and she isn't home yet. Everybody who lives on this street knows Lucy Harris comes home at precisely midnight, her curfew, so she won't get in trouble, and then she stays out in the driveway kissing her boyfriend for as many more minutes as she can steal before she goes inside.
It's not that late, but late enough that the world feels completely uninhabited. Lights in the houses are mostly out. You can see the stars so clearly this time of year. The sky is just so cold, cloudless, and clear. The frigid air mutes sound, there are distant dogs barking, and footsteps?

"I told you," he says. "I live here. Right next to you."
"Oh," she says. "I guess we could have given you a ride. I forgot." She means, she was busy being kissed for the first time.
"It's okay," he says. "I like walking."

So there's a boy next door then. Who knew?

notes: Hailey and Hazel, lol, I bet that gets confusing ;)
Hazel and her friends were so much lighter and fun than Berjes and Hailey's marital troubles that I didn't want Hazel's story to get lost in it (though it ends up complimenting it, in an interesting way), so I split this into two halves. There was just so much. I ended up spending quite a bit of time on this family, since there is an important decision to be made here, and I wanted to be sure.
So it would have been almost a year since their last update, and because they've been in marriage therapy, I had to imagine what kind of progress might have happened in that year. They seemed to be in a worse place than where we left them last, so based on a lot of things (too many to try to list), I decided that they would have separated at some point in that time gap.
Given the separation then, these two updates will become about what do they do with that separation, and of course, what is their final decision? And part 2 will focus much more on that.
Big decision, indeed! I'm really curious as to what they decide to do... though I won't be at all surprised if they decide to divorce.
ReplyDeleteHazel needs to stay away from Angelo... he's bad news! Isaiah, however, could be a good kid. Poor Hazel, Robbie is taken by the best friend... who is certain to become more. ;)
Poor Hailey... I can't imagine being a romance novelist with a failing marriage. It does seem very hypocritical, but the stuff people write in those books is very rarely, if ever, true 'romance' so much as overblown fantasy.
Poor Hailey and Berjes...Like Mao, I wouldn't be surprised if they divorced, but I would be sad for this little family.
ReplyDeleteHailey needs to lock Hazel up whenever Angelo comes around, LOL. ;) Poor Hailey, having to witness her daughter's first kiss with everything going on in her own life.
LOL, Natty-patty's got some nice moves on the dance floor! ;)
Poor Hazel's attack of a first kiss, gross. I doubt she'll hear from Angelo again, but Isaiah is a cutie.
ReplyDeleteAww I was hoping Hailey and Berjes would pull things together but its not looking like they will. Maybe they need a vacation so that they can try to reconnect?
ReplyDeleteHailey go for Isaiah and leave that Angelo Shaw alone, lol
Aww, the D word is coming up. I hate that word. But for some couples it's the only way, the only solution. I really hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does how will Hazel act?
ReplyDeleteAnd talk about an awkward first kiss! Being attacked by Angelo's tounge! But I think she needs to set her eyes on Isaiah. But being a teen means making mistakes. So whoever she picks she'll learn from it.
I love Angelo's look. He just looks so sleezy! It's fitting. Poor Hazel getting her first kiss from him. XD I give Haily credit for letting it go though. Most parents I know would be rushing their child home. "Time to go!"
ReplyDeleteIsaiah is too cute. The whole end scene was just lovely.
Mao, yes, very true! And I think Hailey is finding that out first hand.
ReplyDeleteShana, lol, poor everybody who had to witness that kiss! ;)
Apple, Isaiah is cute. He's from one of those Apartment Life families, and I'd forgot that I stuck them in that house next to her. So I found it amusing when he started following her around that roller rink :)
I don't know if we can write off Angelo so quickly though, they both want to see each other again, lol! She actually has about equal attraction to both. Maybe Isaiah can change her mind ;)
heredon, well, they're having a vacation from each other, lol ;) It's important though, I think, because this time apart has given them (= me) the space to see the exactly where all their troubles are.
Riverdale, Hazel already misses her daddy. I don't know how she would react though, if it were official. I think she's just trying to keep herself busy right now.
Very true about the making mistakes, and in a way, I'm kind of glad for Hazel that she's running into Angelo when it's just a first kiss that might break her heart, you know? Note his LTW, and I'm guessing a lot of girls might not be so lucky.
God, I just want to lock them all up, lol! :)
Lunar, she kind of was trying to push Hazel out the door, lol! I've always seen Hailey as a bit of a pushover to a certain point, but never when it really matters, like in her marriage.
I'm glad you liked the end scene, that felt very atmospheric while I was writing it :)
I like Angelo. I don't know why, maybe it is his look. Isaiah is a nice one. I normally would say that Hazel should go for the good guy. But I just like Angelo so much.
ReplyDeleteI feel a little sorry for Hailey. Her marriage is feeling and now she can't even write romance novels. No fair.
Poor Hazel...her family situation seems a little tough to have to deal with at such a young age. And she seems to like Angelo quite a bit too, but I hope she becomes closer to the boy next door!
ReplyDeleteBTW, how do you handle divorces in your game (eg. how you split the couple's assets or decide who gets to keep the kids)?
Monique, lol, I'm glad Angelo has somebody in his corner :) I'm not sure if I exactly *like* him so much as just find him interesting. I'm definitely looking forward to finding out more about him as he grows up.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I've done one divorce already since blogging this 'hood, and you can kind of look at that as an example: Alana and Sheldon Fortney. Each case would be completely unique though. Alana and Sheldon didn't have many assets to split, and each made about an equal amount of low-level income. Alana had some "issues" at the time of their divorce, so Sheldon was awarded custody of Melissa.
I said Jason and Jodie's parents divorced, but that is just in story. They don't actually have in-game parents.
Hmmm, so my last actual playable divorce before Alana and Sheldon... wow, all the way back to gen. 1 and Claire Bradshaw's parents, Kent and Eliza Deppiesse? Wow, is that really right? LOL! I honestly can't remember how that went except that Eliza got custody of Claire.
I suppose I have a very unrealistic distribution of successful marriages ;)
I don't know about Angelo. His father is hardly a great example for him and Angelo was the name of the only 10 year-old I've ever known who could actually be described as a sleaze, so I might be biased there. Isaiah seems nice but Angelo's got sort of a bad boy thing going on and Hazel might fall for that.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing how the separation pans out (in a few minutes, seeing I'm so far behind!) but I just wanted to say that Mariah certainly has her job cut out for her with these two!
Sim marriages are so easy unless one spouse a) cheats or b) you force it. You have to go looking for drama, so I think many of us have the same problem (if you could call happy marriages a problem).
Sullivan, you're right, girls do tend to go for the bad boys when we're young, don't we?
ReplyDeleteI think you're right about it just being that Sim marriages are so easy. It's hard to make a realistic representation.
