this is kind of like a break-up...

This is the last bit of decorating that I'll ever do for Sims 2. It's Ryanne's bedroom. I thought I'd share those pics here, because I'm not sure how much of her room will make it into the story shots, or from which angles, and well, you won't ever see it again.

I did have a lot of fun putting a couch through the wall like that, like a little window nook, where a teenage girl might sit and daydream - or in Ryanne's case, angst at the world! They can't actually sit on it though - I tried. I have no idea if I tried the same trick in TS3, if they would be able to sit on it.

Hayden and Piper's new house was one of my favorites, so I'll probably try to recreate it for the new version of LH. I never even got to play Bella in her new house, which is a bummer. I won't be recreating all of the houses - I'll download most of them. But I'll try to match their decorating styles and personalities.

It doesn't help that every time I make new TS3 versions of my characters, I just want to tell their stories in TS3 all that much more! And it makes going back to pose them in TS2 all the more like pulling teeth. In TS3, I can just hold down the "alt" key and slide them right alongside each other. No need to go find the right OMSP in my catalog, spend 10 minutes trying to click it because the damn #1 size blends flat into the floor.

There's no freezer clock in TS3, and that is a tragedy. But really, it must be coming soon, right? I would commission it, I'm telling you!

My LH world, while happily coming along, is nowhere even near ready to use. I don't have the best system or graphics card yet - in TS3, my grass looks like pea soup. I don't have nearly all the right CC or mods. I'm finding new things by the day, and there's a lot more awesome stuff out there that I can't wait to find!

But then it also dawned on me that that doesn't mean I can't tell interior stories with TS3!!! And it just so happens that I've got a good bunch of stories set inside the houses, or in generic outdoor settings, for a little while ;)

TS3 sims can be transported between neighborhoods in their houses! (I haven't heard that this is unsafe, the way it was in TS2, am I right?) So I could begin telling their stories now, in the fake LH world, and then when my real world is done, I could transport them all over, link up their family ties again (which is super-easy to do with the master controller!), and have most of my household work done already!

And it might be nice to alternate work on the world with work on the houses and Sims. World-building is exhausting and tedious, even if sometimes fun.

I would love to wait for the right time, wait until everything is ready and finished, wait until I might have a better computer or crisper graphics, or when I might know more tricks in posing the Sims than I do now. But then, I never waited when I jumped in on TS2 either, I built and finished things as I went along.

This next story set (4 pieces, I think) will be our last stories illustrated with Sims 2. That's a lot faster than I said it was going to be, and really, I'm only giving it that much time because I've already gotten about a third of the shots in Sims 2. There will be a small blip of Sims 3 shots in one of the pieces, and I suppose it will be a test run. Will it work? Can I get their expressions and poses right? Will they pass off for the real deal?

I had intended to finish out the rest of the season on TS2, so that the transition to TS3 illustrations would start with a new story, and might not be so shocking, but I'm not sure I'll make it that far. The simple fact is, I just don't *want* to work with TS2 anymore. And when I have so little free time to work on this as it is, the last thing I want to do is spend that little bit of time working with something that's not fun.

It's kind of like dating... You know, when you already know you're going to dump your boyfriend, but you say, maybe let's just make it through the holidays, nobody wants to break up with someone right before the holidays. Definitely by spring, because you want to be single for the summer, but not right smack dab in the middle of the holidays. But when it comes down to it, when it's over, you know it's over. And he knows it's over, because it feels like it's over, and everybody can see that it's over because it's written all over your face. And maybe sometimes it's just best to let things be over.

I never thought I'd say it, but here I am, and here it is - my dear TS2, I am SO over you! :\

I don't know what I'm saying exactly, except that I hope you'll all understand if my pictures are boring or fewer for a little while, or if I don't have much cool CC yet, or if all the shots are indoors to mask the fact that my world isn't finished yet, or if they do manage to be outside, if my grass looks like pea soup. I'm sure the shots will seem bland for a little while, compared to what I've been able to do in TS2, at least until I learn some new tricks. And though I'll try to make the transition as seamless as possible, there may still be a couple bumps in the path.

I know breaking up is always hard to do, and I know it's especially hard when it comes sooner than you expected. So I'm sorry about that! But I also know we're all grown-ups here, so I hope we can be kind about it.

Somebody think of the children! ;)

  1. Oh my goodness, I love your post. I felt the same way about switching over. I kept TS2 on my PC for the longest, till I needed room for more CC for TS3. I cried as I sat there and hit "uninstall". But knew deep down it was for the best. I put the TS2 disc boxes in the back of a drawer, just as I would pictures and trinkets of a lost love. :) There they sit, collecting dust and now that the pain has subsided, I can look at them with fond memories.

  2. I completely understand how you feel! When my computer kept having problems with TS2, I was already getting to the point that I didn't want to play it anymore. I still think it's amazing and loved playing and still love reading everyone else's TS2 stories, but I had no desire to try to work with TS2 myself anymore. I was totally ready to move on. There are a lot of things I'm still hoping will be added through mods or expansions, but I really am happy playing TS3 now. I didn't think I'd say that this soon! ;)

  3. I did have a feeling this was coming and probably sooner rather than later. But as a TS2 devotee, I'm still a little bit sad about it. ;)

Okay, I'm done blubbering, lol! If you truly don't have the desire to work with TS2 any more, then of course you shouldn't. I very much doubt your pictures will be boring. You've got a good eye for this kind of thing, so you'll find a way to add some interest, I'm sure. And even without CC, it's easy enough in TS3 to customise the objects so they're not EA-fugly.

TS3 Piper and Hayden look awesome by the way. Especially Hayden - he's looking really good! I also love Ryanne's room. That traffic light on the floor is so great and it seems very Ryanne to me as well. The perfect touch!

  4. TS3 Piper looks so sweet! Hayden too, they look great.

I like Ryanne's room. In the 7 years I've been playing TS2 I haven't managed to use that bedding even once but seeing it in her room makes me want to fire up my game and use it.

About your switch to TS3, I'm very curious to see what will happen. I also doubt that your pictures will look bad. From what I've seen from your game so far, they all look good!

And one last thing, I used that trick with the couch in TS3 in one of my houses and it works!

  5. Your sims look awesome! What skins and extras are you using to create them?

  6. To be honest? I think LH will be LH whether you illustrate it with TS2, TS3 or some version of The Sims yet to be invented.

And I'm aching to see LH in TS3.

So, bye TS2 - it was fond and all - but the hood is dead, long live the hood!

  7. I totally know how you feel, been there once before. I still sort of miss my sims2 though, I found my old blog the other day and it took me back on such an memory lane...I actually finished my hood 3 times and 3 times rebuilt it cause of issues or corrupting...after 3rd time I couldn't do it anymore...we were done and i had to move to sims3, it was first painful but now second nature. I think LH is LH no matter what and am looking forward to your first ever sims3 story post.

  8. I'm really going to miss TS2 Lakeside Heights when you switch over to TS3 completely, but if you don't like playing TS2 anymore and it doesn't get your intrest as much as TS3 does, then there really is no reason to stick with it.
I'm looking forward to seeing TS3 Lakeside Heights as well :) I'm kind of torn between the two :)

I'm 100% sure that you're pictures will never ever be boring!
If a game doesn't intrest you that much anymore and you can still make such an amazing room as Raynne's I don't think anything of you will ever be boring!

TS3 Piper and Hayden are looking great!! Such a cute couple!
And those pictures of TS3 Summer and Tyler are amazing!

  9. Thank you for the kind words everyone! It's funny how attached we get to things like this. Who would have ever thought you could feel guilty for coming to the end of playing a game? lol! But I suppose, in the capacity that we story-bloggers use it, it's a bit more than a game to us... Which is also shamefully dorky, but ah well, it is what it is! ;)

If all goes according to plan, Justin and Stephanie should get the first full TS3 stories. Which is kind of convenient, because you guys never even saw the inside of Justin's house in TS2, lol!

Mrs. Stuffy, yes, it's the fond memories that are most important. I'm very glad I'll still have the whole beginning of this story illustrated with TS2 to look back on.

Somebody else said it, somewhere, that it would be like looking back through vintage photos or something! :)

Shana, I figured you would get it! :) Yes, we could stand to have a couple more things, but I think TS3 is at a really fun place finally. There's a lot to do with it. I do hope we get weather and swimming on the beaches again though!

Carla, ha, I thought maybe some of you could see me being burnt out on it. I keep saying it's just because I'm busy with other stuff, but I've been busy with other stuff before and still managed to make time. Now, when I load up TS2, it just sits there on my PC while I have TS3 running and playing on my laptop, lol!

Thanks! And oooh, I need to find Ryanne's traffic light lamp for TS3, totally! I loved adding that to her room.

Flit, lol, isn't it funny the stuff you never manage to use in so much time!?! I think Ryanne might be the only character who could ever pull off that bedding.

Glad to hear the couch trick works! Yay! :)

Georgiedean, I just added my TS3 links to the top bar. Dig in! :)

Kiri, thank you! I hoped you all would feel that way, that the story transcended the game enough to be illustrated in any medium. You're right, this story might move on past TS3 some day too. As long as I can customize it enough to suit my style and world, it shouldn't matter.

Speechless, yes, TS2 hoods have been known to be very glitchy like that. Thank you! I'm so excited to start using it! :)

Tanja, I'm glad you'll be sticking with me! I hope the pictures will come out looking good enough. My laptop isn't very powerful, but it does run the game on most of the highest settings (even if it's a bit fuzzy). I'll try to make it look as good as I can!

Thank you! The characters are my first priority, so I'm glad they're working so far. I'm not so attached to duplicating their houses and decorating exactly, but I want the characters to look like themselves! :)

  10. I agree with all above. I am happy that you are transitioning to TS3. As for me I loveTS2 the best. I look at TS3 scenes and I just am not interested in buying it. For right now I am uber in love with TS2. Having said that who knows if when you start posting with TS3 I will run out and buy it. Regardless of TS2 and TS3 pictures, your stories make a great read for me/us!

  11. Awwww... *sniff*

Ok, now I've got that over with... :) I'm a TS2 loyalist too, so I'll miss seeing LH illustrated with 'my' game, but ultimately it won't change the stories. I haven't been playing TS2 for so long, but if you've gone as far as you can with it, then it's time to move on.

I'm looking forward to see how it works out... someday I'll have to make the switch (or to TS4? :) ), and it'll be good to have other players' experiences to take into account.

  12. Well, now, Laura, I must hunt you down and egg your house, and leave a bag of flaming poo on your doorstop. ROFL Like Carla, I knew this day was coming as well. But I understand. I'm still very much in love with S2 than S3, even with all the trouble I'm having with my game, with stupid pc viruses. Ugh. Sometimes I'm ready to toss in the towel and move everyone over to S3, but I'm holding out. I'm not ready to give up the world's greatest game just yet.

I still look forward to reading about your little simmies even in their new "busted" world. And really, just from the previews that you have shown us, your sims still look like themselves. They don't like any different. I really can't wait to see the rest of them! It's like holding out for your gift, just have to wait until the gift giver is ready to give them away. So I'll sit, and wait. And don't worry about your video card, we honestly don't care. We just want story. But I know you care... okay, I'm going to stop babbling now. Just know that we are here, waiting, rooting for you all the way!

  13. I love TS2. I'm backing up my main neighborhood that I play and my downloads onto an external...I'm installing TS3. You've converted me Laura!

  14. I apologize for my earlier comment having the non-sense letters and numbers name...technology has defeated me once more.

  15. It's a bit sad but I suppose I knew it was coming, like you mentioned. I know it will happen to me someday, especially if I can convince someone to get me TS3 for my birthday. I'm excited to see more when you get the chance. I love seeing what some of your Sims have looked like in their TS3 forms.

Have you given TS2 the "It's not you, it's me" speech just yet? =P

    ReplyDelete
  16. Aww what a sad sad post!! I love TS2, I can't believe you'd break up with it. :p I am definitely excited to be reading your blog in TS3 format, and Hayden and Piper look great. I do love Ryanne's room, very fitting.

  17. Well done on your journey into the light side ;)

Doesn't Twallan's Relativity mod do something like the freezer clock? Not au fait with my TS2 mods I'm afraid, but you can muck about with time settings etc with Relativity.

And yes, you can move houses etc across neighbourhoods. Gets more complicated to move multiple households with their houses and keep relationships but a combination of saving them to the bin and using Twallan's porter should see you right.

Basically, worshipping at Twallan's altar is they key to TS3 success.

  18. I think the important thing is that you do what makes you feel good. I am very excited for you and can't wait to see your adventures with ts3.

I probably sound like a broken record but it isn't the shots that make a story even if they do enhance it. The writing, the story itself is what keeps people coming back for more. You can have stunning shots that are carefully planned but if the words don't follow suit then it isn't enough.

  19. I'm a little sad that you're finished with the sims 2, but there is no reason you should stick with it just to make me happy. I might not like playing the sims 3, but I do like reading it, so I can't wait for you to make the transition. Have you announced what characters you will be recreating yet?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bernz, ha, you never know! ;) But thank you for sticking with the story!

Blackcat, that's a big perk for me, having joined TS3 so late, I have so many people around to answer my questions and point me to the good CC, lol! :D

Riverdale, LMAO! You have much more persistence than I do! If I'd had even half as many troubles as you have, I would have chucked it a long time ago!

    Thank you! :)

TwistedSymphony, lol! Have fun! It's a really great game - just make sure you raid my downloads list, because it's a lot better all fixed up! ;)

Choco, nope, haven't given the speech yet - I need to get a few more story pics from the old thing before I kick it to the curb ;) Oh, she must feel so used, lol!

Maisie, thank you! But yes, it is a bit sad, me and TS2 have been going together a really long time. But you know, not everything lasts forever ;)

Rad, lol, I figured half of y'all would be upset, and the other half would be welcoming me to the party! ;)

Yes, I grab up every Twallan mod I can get my grubby little hands on! :D

Gayl, thank you! You're absolutely right! Now I guess I have to prove that my story is up to snuff or not, lol!

Coolkat, I'm recreating ALL of them!!! Now how's that for crazy? lol! But really, apart from maybe some very minor secondary characters, I'll need them all to make the transition! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Also, @Rad, yes, Relativity is like the Freezer Clock in that it stops time, and that is useful. But the Freezer Clock also stops Sims in the middle of an animation, even after you unpause the game, which is priceless in catching Sims in individual poses while letting the time run to arrange other Sims in other poses or out of sync. Best TS2 mod ever!!!

  22. Laura! I had no idea you were switching to TS3 already. Go figure. That's what happens when you have your head in the sand FOREVER.

I'm very, very, very interested in seeing how you bend the unruly TS3 under your mighty will. :D

I miss TS2, but more as a nostalgic, the way it was then, etc feel. I miss it. We didn't have a good break-up... or one at all. My HD crashed, took all my hard work with it, and I said F U and didn't touch the sims for a long time... lol.

But again, I'm excited! As for pictures, ugh, sister... you're singing to the choir. I'm someone in love with photography with a semi-natural eye for it and TS3 throws that in my face like it means nothing. It says, "YOU WANT AN ARTSY PHOTO? WELL SCREW YOU, HAVE SOME BLOOM LIGHTING!" and yeah, it's a mess. It takes forever to get your feel. I have aikea_guinea's camera mod and I still feel like I'm slogging through mud.

  23. Hi Mao! Yup, I got the game finally a few months ago, and fell in love with it pretty quickly. I kind of knew I would, after having seen what other people have done with it. I've always wanted LH to hold the illusion of one big open world, so it makes sense that I'd move to TS3 in time. And I think there's finally enough in terms of CC and mods for me to work with it the way I want.

Glad to see you around again! :)

  24. On Shana's blog, Pine Hollow, you mentioned that you tweaked your aging and pregnancy mods. Could you explain how you did that and how you came up with your numbers? I am stumped.

  25. Yup, I sure will! I had planned on posting something about that soon! I'll probably put that up over on the babble blog in the next couple of days.
