Let's all say it, folks, "Photobucket blows!"
Sorry if anyone was in the middle of reading something. I'm back home again now, and I'll try to work on something new for you to read this week - something small at least...
And maybe if my brain is too soggy to do much writing, I might work on relinking some of those archive pictures - I've gotten as far back as May so far, lol! Only 2500 more pictures to relink!
(OMG, Photobucket sucks for blowing so hard, lol!)
OMG, 2500! to go! You have your worked cut out for you. LOL
ReplyDeleteBeen thinking about you. Glad you made it back home safely. Agree photobucket blows.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely noticed when the bandwidth went out, I'm trying to fix simpe to load so I can do the heights all the way around. There one hour, gone the next.
Riverdale, I know, is that ridiculous or what? I fully realize it might take forever - at an average of about 30 pics per update, if I relink two each week, it will take me 41 weeks to get through to the beginning, which is just short of a year, lol!
ReplyDeletemaisie, sorry you got cut off! But, (ah-ha!) this gives me an idea :) I've been working backwards in chronological order, but maybe instead I should relink the most popular ones first? Maybe that might take some load off my wimpy photobucket account so at least the pictures won't go down before the month is over.
So which other posts do you guys use most often? I'll relink the height post first ;)
I relinked the pictures for the height/aging post, the tax collection post, and the neighborhood overview. I also updated two of my maps, which haven't been updated in forever! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Laura! Good idea with those that are most popular. I'd gather that any in your side navigation would be popular. I know I'm more likely to look to your information posts to the right, than go back to last December. (could also be that I'm all read up, heheh)
ReplyDeleteIt so does blow! And suck!
ReplyDeleteI just got my first bandwidth warning in my e-mail this morning. I've not run out yet but it's only the 6th so I'm going to need to find a solution soon!
Carla, I bet a lot of people are noticing it more now that they've chopped their free bandwidth from 25 GB to 10! That's crazy! That's less than half!
ReplyDeleteOh, so that's why! I didn't realise they'd cut their bandwidth - I had no idea what it was before.
ReplyDeleteI've upgraded to a paid account for now but I really want to find something better when I can. I'm sick of their censoring, for one thing. :\
I upgraded to a paid account too. My reason was to get rid of the ads because I got a virus from one of their ads. If you find something better, let me know. :)
ReplyDeleteUgh, it pains me to see you guys giving money to Photobucket! (being dramatic (kind of), lol!) And even so, you still get censored, and have your linked images compressed. That sucks!
ReplyDeleteI hear people are having good luck with wordpress hosting, which is free and you get 4 GB of space. I'm not sure about bandwidth though. Since it's free, I'm guessing it won't be much.
I'm hosting through GoDaddy.com - it's four or five dollars a month for economy hosting, which is plenty for what we're doing. Another $10 or so a year for my domain. You'll have to do a lot more yourself if you go this route, but you also get a LOT more freedom and security.
I know, nobody wants to pay to write a silly Sims blog, but the peace of mind is worth it for me. Especially if my only other option is paying for Photobucket. I figured, if I'm putting as much effort as I do into this story, I don't want it hosted on some free service that can just change its rules and crap all over my work at the drop of their hat, you know?
I have hubby helping me with the technical stuff, but I'm using my main wordpress blog as content management, and it's working really well so far. Fingers crossed.
If you peeps put me over bandwidth after all this though (probably not going to happen at 300GB/month), I'm totally selling out for some ads! :p
I eventually want to move to a hosting service too (looking at Square Space). I'd like to put my programming skills to use and make my directory pages database-driven, so a service where I could use MySQL and PHP would be ideal. The downside of moving is that I probably won't have access to my site at work. Our network here blocks Wordpress and LiveJournal (for some reason they've left Blogger alone). My work network also blocks Square Space, so I probably wouldn't have access to my site while at work. :(
ReplyDeleteOops, forgot to add that I also upgraded to Premium service on Tribal Pages. There are worse ways to spend your money. For you, especially, Laura, since you want to write professionally, I think you should consider it an investment. ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I didn't want to pay for Photobucket either but if my pics go down, they'll all go down because they're all on Photobucket. So I wanted to prevent that until I could sort out a permanent solution. :\ It's tricky.
ReplyDeleteI want to get some proper webspace but I'm a little nervous about it. I'm not usually nervous about computer-related stuff but this is completely unfamiliar territory for me. I never expected Sullivan to get even half as popular as it has and having to get extra hosting for it is not something I'd ever considered.
snarky, I do definitely consider my website an investment. I've had it for quite a while now, and I've been blogging for even longer, but hopefully I'll have something real to put in my portfolio soon. It's one of my goals for this year, to finally start taking myself more seriously in my writing career, which includes actually submitting things, lol!
ReplyDeleteCarla, you must have just as many pictures as I have, or more! All of mine are on Photobucket too (apart from the ones I've already moved), and it really *really* sucks that they're doing this to us.
I'd be lost in all this without my hubby! I wouldn't even know where to start with the database stuff. Most companies offer technical support though.
This stuff can be learned, and I'd probably be more proactive to learn about it myself if I didn't have my hubby to leach off of. He's already taught me to write some of my own code, and I can confidently poke around in the stylesheets to make modifications here and there.
And in other notes... I've updated two more maps, and the neighborhood overview. (Lake City crashed my slow-ass computer about eight times just trying to get the screenshot!!!)
And I'm working on a real update for you to read soon too :)
And further chatter...
ReplyDeleteSilent Watcher: I found this linked over on SimHaven, and OMG, have you ever seen anything like it? I knew people made movies with the Sims, but WOW! I've been watching them all afternoon instead of writing my next update, lol! :)
I stopped using photobucket for new pictures a couple months ago, but I still have all of my old pictures there. I don't think I've run out of bandwidth yet, but apparently they've cut down on the amount of free space they offer you because I get emails from them saying my account is at 99% full. But when I had stopped using it, it had plenty of space still left. :( I'm hosting my pictures with wordpress, since that's where my blog is and it's working fine, except every now and then a picture doesn't want to show up so I have to re-add it to the gallery.
ReplyDeleteI'm in awe of those videos you linked. I can't imagine how long it took to make those. I've tried making Sims videos a few times, but I gave up because it was just too much work for me, LOL!
I think I've watched a few of these. I love watching the movies sim fans make, and the time and effort put into them. I've only done Sim Nations Next Top Model, and that was tircky for me to do. I can't imagine the skill it takes someone to produce such awesome movies. If you want to see my (lame) directing just do a search for GoldenBuffy on youtube.
ReplyDeleteAs for image hosting and all that stuff. I have very limited knowledge of HTML coding. So if I were to buy my own domain would I just be uploading the images? Whould it produce the HTML coading for me to place on Blogger under the HTML format? I am lost. LOL I need help! LOL
What I'm thinking of doing is signing up for some webspace for a month, just to see if I can figure it out. If I can't, I've spent $5 and I'm stuck with Photobucket. If I can...well, I might end up finding a good solution for myself.
ReplyDeleteLaura, do I need hosting and a domain, or are they one and the same, generally? I notice you said you had both but your URL is still a blogspot one. I thought a domain was just a personalised URL. Am I mixing up my terminology terribly? LOL.
Good luck for those on the search for web hosting/domains. I used to have a wealth of information in this subject, and was in web/graphic development, but retired to focus on kids/husband *cough*sims*cough* (kidding, that's just a bonus).
ReplyDeleteJust Host came highly recommended from resources and a few blog friends. I use them now for my neglected family blog. Never had any issues, and lightening responses to my questions/problems.
Shana, they did cut their storage space by half as well! I know it used to be 1GB, and now it's only 500MB. Sucks!
ReplyDeleteAnd LOL, I tried to make my own movie once and quit after about five seconds :)
Riverdale, you would likely have to write your own HTML, but I promise you, it's very very easy to do!
<img src="image-location.jpg">
That's all there is to it!
In fact, I find it a lot easier now, because instead of having to flip back and forth from Photobucket copying and pasting code, I just copy my code once, paste it thirty or so times where I want a picture, and change the filename part of the code at the end to show a different picture. It saves me tons of time! :)
Carla, if you take a peek at the file location for one of my pictures, you'll see it's hosted at my main blog. So, I guess I'm kind of hotlinking myself, lol!
Now, I'm massively talking out of my ass here, but I'll try to explain what (I think) I know. Hosting and domain are different things. The hosting is the actual disk space and bandwidth you're allowed, and the domain is your location on the internet - I'm sure some companies sell them as a package, but otherwise, you'll have to purchase them separately.
The thing is that pictures have to have a location on the internet to be linked to (or I guess, called from?). But domains are hella cheap, especially if you want something unique and specific and that nobody else would ever want to buy.
maisie, that Just Host looks pretty user-friendly. I'm sure these companies get people like us calling and asking all kinds of questions all the time :)
Ah, okay, Laura! Thanks. That was kind of what I was thought but I was thrown off because of your blogspot URL.
ReplyDeletehey laura!
