one day, when the world is rapt to attention...

August 2082 (mini-update)

One day, when the world is rapt to attention, Madison Riley delivers a public address. "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I want to thank you all for joining me today. Earlier this morning, world leaders made public the presence of a possible threat to our planet. We've known about this situation for some time now, and we've been monitoring it closely. I'd like to talk to you about how this will affect us on a local level."

Well, Madison has almost everyone's attention this morning. Clarice is supposed to be blogging the live news coverage, but instead she sees Blake in the back row and flashes him a flirty smile. She doesn't normally get to see her husband while they're working, so right now, she feels a little bit like a giddy teenager, passing by her high school sweetheart in the hallways.

Pay attention, Clarice, this is going to be important.

"There is nothing for us to do here but remain calm. It's kind of like playing Scrabble," she says.

Scrabble, good point. Clarice writes this down.

"You could have a really great word to play," Madison continues. "You could have a game-breaking play, but it's not your turn, and you just have to wait for the other person to put down their word first. Because it could make or break your word completely. Maybe you can't even put down your word anymore. And maybe their word was some tiny little three-letter word a child could have put down, and they put it down in the spot you wanted! Then you have to brainstorm all over from the start. That's why we need to remain calm, and just see what their word is."

Madison puts on her serious face and chooses her words very carefully - they don't want to call these beings "invaders" yet. So they're simply calling them "the presence."

"The presence does not appear to be hostile at the moment," she says. "But their quantity gives us cause for alarm. Each state will be sending troops into space for defense, and we hope, eventual communication. We are calling for volunteers and we would like to avoid a draft at all costs."

Blake decides to move up to the front row, you know, so he can pay better attention.

Clarice whispers to him, "I was thinking maybe Chinese and a movie tonight."

He whispers back, "Yeah, and maybe a bath after the kids are in bed."

They air kiss to each other. She giggles.

And they're not the only ones discussing personal affairs, like Amelia's parents discussing her ex-boyfriend. Andy says, "He was a nice guy, maybe we were too hard on him. Do you think we discouraged her? Do you think she'll never marry now?"

Claire says, "I'll be perfectly proud of her if she never marries. She's a strong, beautiful, independent woman. She doesn't need a husband to consider herself valid."

"Of course," Andy says. "But what about grandbabies?"

Madison overhears her brother say "grandbaby" and it brings a smile to her face. She has her first grandbaby due any day now!

She says, "Okay, let's take some questions."

Cabe Deppiesse, being a military man, wants to talk about the troops that will need to be allocated. He says, "We have ranks of soldiers, commanders, and a flight crew, but we'll need more. Each state will have a quota to fill."

Bryson objects, "How many new people? Surely the draft wouldn't include women, right?" He can't bear the thought of his baby girls being drafted off to war. That, or his two very eligible and out of college sons-in-law!

Blake is horrified. He's very glad his little boy is only five.

Cabe says, "Well, there hasn't been a military draft in over a hundred years. As it stands right now, women are not included in the selective service. We encourage all able-bodied people to volunteer though, men and women alike."

Cabe continues, "And I think it's important we note here the alien race we're concerned about is one of many alien races we've discovered. We're not meaning to imply they're all dangerous. We're not even sure that this one is dangerous. We're just being preemptive."

Of course, Cabe is thinking about his brother. He told Orion this morning that the information would go public, just like he promised. And he told them just to sit tight for a while. He can't really predict how people will react. Maybe they won't know for some time still.

"Thank you, everyone, for being here today," Madison says. "I have every reason to believe this will be resolved in a safe and timely manner."

notes: Blake and Clarice would not stop staring at each other, lol! Remember when we were talking about "light up the room" factor? They definitely have it! :)

And sorry about the long front page scroll - my excerpt isn't working for me on this one for some reason.

notes on an extraterrestrial war:

So it was revealed in Cabe Deppiesse's update a little about the war ROS. I've decided to plan an extraterrestrial war, because as a writer, I don't think I'm brave enough to write a realistic human war, and have that touch so close to home for so many people. Although I think we'll find that war touches close to home in what it means, and how the families deal with it at home, whether they're fighting a race of aliens, or another country here on Earth.

I'm not sure how much of the actual conflict I will write - I might instead choose to tell the story through the families left behind, and maybe some news coverage or announcements from government officials. I am intrigued by the complete disillusion a family member must feel to send a loved one off to fight, to such an unconcievably foreign place, to be so detached from it all where they can only hope they come back safely. This, I'm sure, stands true for many wars we've seen in real history.

That said, I might try to write a tiny bit from the military's perspective as well. Hubby thinks I should watch Battlestar Gallactica for research, so I might just do that ;)

I don't plan on this story turning sci-fi, really, or at least no more than it already is having an alien family living here. And I don't want it to become too involved either (let me remind myself here that I have a real novel I should be working on...). I also don't want it to get too heavy - though it will just by its very nature. But anyway, the largest portion of these Lakeside Heights stories will remain the same, though I can tell you almost all of my families will be affected in one way or another.

You could speculate on how much aliens are actually sci-fi - or maybe I've been listening to too many of my hubby's conspiracy theories ;) Many people believe that we are not alone in the universe, and some people even believe that there are aliens living among us already in secret, like Orion's family. Some people also believe that the world is readying us to announce that they have made contact with alien life. It's only a matter of time, I'm sure, once we meet that alien life, that we would end up fighting with it. As humans, we tend to be that way inclined.

So we'll consider this a realistic story still, set in the not-too-distant future (the year is 2082, after all). Life will go on, as life tends to do, there will still be all the drama and shenanigans, but there will be this war going on in the background.

sci-fi, politics, history, and geography:

And maybe we should hammer out exactly what we know, as far as the technical details go, and you can ask questions if you need to. I can't promise I'll know the answers to them all yet, but I'll try. I'm making this up as I go, people ;)

The military knows we are not alone in the universe. I imagine the first contact was made in the year 2012 (everybody likes to use that year), but the military kept it mostly quiet for a long time. I do believe the people of Earth know it now as well, and have for some time. You'll notice that Sims know no discrimination of race or skin-color. I think it would take something as monumental as finding extraterrestrial life to genuinely unite us as "human beings of Earth." And while we would be united as humans, we also tend not to tolerate things that are "different" and they would turn their prejudices towards these alien races instead. They have found several races of extraterrestrial life, most of it non-aggressive, but they believe this one race to be different (lol, maybe I should give them a name? any suggestions?). But the people of Earth have never come face-to-face with any of them before (that they know of).

It has been mentioned that the world has experienced a long span of peace time. Some of the residents of Lakeside Heights will be going off to war, along with many other military and recruits from all around the planet. In this future I imagine, the countries of the world have united and instead of dividing themselves into countries, have instead partitioned themselves into states for management.

Madison is the governor of a "state" (I haven't actually ever named it before). Lake City is the capital city of this state, and Lakeside Heights and Bluewater Township are its suburubs. This state, I have mentioned, is on the shores of Lake Michigan. I imagine they would be bigger than the US states are now currently, this one in particular maybe encompassing all of the Great Lakes area.

That's what I've hammered out so far, and I'm sure there are things I didn't think about.

So, I will now take questions from the public, lol ;)

  1. I was totally waiting for that to end in, "so say we all!" If you watch BSG, you'll get where that's from. Fiance drug me into watching and it and I HATE Sci-Fi stuff. Pewpew laser beams and blegh, but BSG was actually good... though got a bit TOO Soap Opera, talkytalkty sometimes. Less talky, more killy, please.

Space fight, well, it is better than a real fight. Given the current situation. I couldn't imagine writing a war, period. I like that you're keeping the same pacing, though, and not making this super heavy/serious. I like the way it is now and it'll definitely be cool to see how everyone reacts.

How are you going to manage the "sending away" of sims? Just move them to a different lot?

  2. Mao, I don't watch it yet, but I really think I will. As soon as I told hubby what I was writing about here, he said I should watch it. He's been begging me to watch it since forever though :)

For my military Sims, I think I'll move them all to another lot, in my move-away subhood (so they don't walk by), and put prisoner tokens in their inventory so they don't show up on any community lots. That has worked pretty well for me so far with my regular move-aways.

  3. This is very interesting. I can't wait to see how this all unfolds and how it affects each family. I don't really have any questions at the moment, but I'm sure some will come to mind as we get further into this storyline!

For a second, I thought this "threat" that Madison was talking about was the TS3 introduction. I thought you were thinking about moving Lakeside Heights to TS3 and was wondering how you were gonna pull that off! But I'm glad to see that's not the case. I'm too attached to your hood in TS2 and I just don't think it'd be the same any other way!

  4. I don't have any question either, yet. But i'm sure they will come as time unfolds and so does the story. I don't watch BSG, could never get into it. For me Sci-Fi has always been Star Trek and then it grew to include Stargate. And my new all time fav. Stargate Atlantis. So if you need watching material, I say watch Stargate Atlantis. lol

As for naming of the Alines how about the Wreath? They are a huminoid species from STA, which are also half bug. Theya re very hostile and the feed off humans throught a feeder in their hands. God, I love them. lol

I mean, if your going to the enemy aline rance and all. They would be a good for the running. Oh, or maybe the Borg from Star Trek. Ok, running away now!

  5. I like the idea of little sci-fi added to your story:)
It will be interesting to see how it adds new plot twists.

Some random babbling about the pictures – lol at the ugly townie at one of them. I have to admit that the fact that you too get ugly townies made me smile, not in a bad way though. It's just that everyone else I have seen so far has been pretty for the eye and I always wondered how you managed this.
Also, lol at the diva on the parking slot;)

  6. I don't have any questions right now, but I can't wait to see what happens. I'm a big sci-fi geek girl, so I like the idea of the war being from an alien species.

What I'm most interested in seeing is how the idea and the effects of war change people in Lakeside Heights. Of course, life will go on much the same as it was before, but who will be different in personality, demeanor, or outlook on life once this is over and they've dealt with the consequences it brings?

  7. Very interesting. I too thought about the TS3 as the invasion, but that may be since Simmerville used an alien attack ploy as thier explanation for TS2. It will be interesting to see how the families behave. As a military brat you learn to take each day in stride and many of the soilders don't come home. Can't wait to see who will volunteer/be drafted. Is that ROS based or do you get to pick them?

  8. This is my first time posting but I love your hood! It's amazing, all the work you must put into it.....I'm following one family (not really a legacy challenge because I play by my own rules and there are no heirs I play with everyone) and I have trouble keeping up with all it's members.....I can't imagine an entire town! Love it!

  9. Mandie, lol, no, I'm quite a ways off from TS3 still. But just from what I've seen so far (Jen at Mt. Geneva has done some great little character pieces already!), I think chances are pretty good I'll switch over at some point, but I've got a lot to finish up here first. I'll wait until I'm absolutely sure it will work for the way I play. The gameplay might be a little different, but the characters and storytelling are from my head and can move with me anywhere I like ;)

Hmmm, so I guess I might as well just tell you all that I am working towards a proper ending here before I jump ship for Sims 3. I have three more rounds planned, which at my rate will probably take about another year or more, lol! But then, I expect to see at least a couple EPs out of Sims 3 and some good CC and mods too.

And this war ROS does, in a very loose far-off way, contribute to the ending.

Riverdale, those aliens sound scary! LOL! Eeek! If my Sims fought them, I don't know if they'd make it out alive! Good suggestions though!

oookonxooo, lol, that diva looks lost, doesn't she? :) And yes, I have tried my very best to rid this town of Fuglies - not necessarily going for pretty-pretties either though, just human-looking.

Shana, I'm hoping to explore all those things too. But man, when you put it like that, you make that sound so huge! I hope I can deliver, lol! :)

Apple, the one who doesn't make it home is rolled randomly, and any draft would be random as well, but I think I might have three volunteers worked out :)

Taylor, hi and thank you and welcome! It's not a lot of work so much as it just adds up to a lot over time :)

  10. Oh, I can't wait to see exactly how you do this. You are so talented, and you do such a great job of keeping things real and yet never too heavy, even as you bring tears to our eyes.

But, yes, you need to keep working on your actual novel!

  11. This was a very good update, but I'm still very sad...

I'll go by the old expression, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

What you have here works so well! I would hate to see you just get rid of all the hard work in all these towns. And I'm sure we'd loose a lot of residents in the process of switching over!

And how would that work, exactly? Would it be sims 3 versions of some families?

But I also trust you, seeing as you've made so many wonderful decisions here! And will stick with Lakeside Heights etiher way.

  12. I just rolled this ROS, well to send 12 sims to the sim bin for a war, not quite as detailed. I haven't decided how to put it into my story play yet. I'm very curious how it will pan out in your story.

I know what you mean about lighting up the room, I have a couple with three bolts that just don't have that spark. He has wants for her all the time, but she only has a time or two.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This is a pretty interesting start and I think it moves naturally. I can't wait to see where you take it

  14. "You'll notice that Sims know no discrimination of race or skin-color. I think it would take something as monumental as finding extraterrestrial life to genuinely unite us as "human beings of Earth." "

That would be nice, that's for sure.

So the aliens are already on Earth and everyone is now aware of this? Are the aliens situated somewhere far away from Lakeside Heights and that's why there's a need for the military to go "away"? Or are they actually going to take the aliens on on their own turf, off in space somewhere? I'm gathering it's the former because it doesn't sound like they want to act pre-emptively against "the presence" but I just wanted to check.

On a lighter note, Clarice and Blake are adorable!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lunar, thanks! :)

bbop, think of it more as a sequel than a cancellation ;) And the way I figure it, because I've put so much into this neighborhood and story, I think it deserves to have a proper ending, rather than just fizzle out to some inconsequential end.

My plan is, if/when Sims 3 reaches a point of customization I can work with, that I will take a select group of families - I'm thinking about 30 Sims - and painstakingly recreate them as best I can. I won't do it until I'm sure it will work, I promise.

maisie, that war ROS has to be the most complicated I've ever rolled!

heredon, thanks. I can't wait to see either, lol! :)

Sullivan, there was quite a bit revealed between Cabe and Orion a while back. There are no aliens on Earth (besides Orion's family), but everyone does know that alien life exists within the universe. But this new race of aliens are starting to "gather" was the best I could describe it, in our solar system, and the quantity gathering feels like too many to consider it a friendly visit. For defense, they'll be sending troops out into space. They hope to communicate with them first. And if/when any conflict happens, it will happen in space.

LOL, I still can't believe I'm attempting to write this - I'm a literary-family-drama-romance writer, for crying out loud! That's my disclaimer ;)

Yes, lets just all get giddy over Clarice and Blake :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I actually really like sci-fi stories that involve romance and relationships and home life, so I'm interested to see how you're going to do it :)

I'm also worried for Orion's family... how many people are going to understand that his species has nothing to do with this? :/

I liked hearing about how you see the larger world in your story, too. I've been trying to figure that out myself, because I'm going to need to mention it at least in passing later on in my legacy story. World Adventures throws a wrench in the works, because the places in it are sort of real places and sort of not.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Luminessence, that's something I'm worried about for Orion's family too!

I'm growing to enjoy the semi-futuristic freedom I'm able to take here, so I can set the story in the real world, but make allowances for things that might have changed in 70-something years. It's a lot of fun! :)

But yes, World Adventures would be perplexing if you were trying to write an other-worldly kind of story.

  18. If you want a really really good sci-fi program to watch- Babylon 5 will do it for you. Five seasons, and the story develops with quie a lot of depth, but also includes many alien races, and doesn't paint one race the bad guys or another the good guys.
