May 2083 (graduation) - Summer Phoenix, Dallas Deppiesse, and Vicky Garth are 18, Lucy Harris is 16, Sarah Harris is 14.

Summer says to him, "Haven't you learned enough already?"

"You kids will just have to put aside your differences for a couple hours," she says.

"Get over what? I don't know what you're talking about."
"Whatever it is you've had stuck up your butt your whole life," Summer says.

He doesn't remember Vicky being so bitter, and he's sorry to admit that he probably had something to do with this transformation. So when Summer laughs, Dallas considers not laughing along with her, since mocking isn't very nice. But in the end, Vicky isn't very nice anymore either, so he laughs.

Congratulations Lakeside Heights High School class of 2083!

Lucy is more than happy to oblige. In fact, she'd already made her way through most of the audience within fifteen minutes of the ceremony, and arranged Summer's grandmother to bring a few dishes with her.
Everyone is invited, and everyone is coming.

Vicky sneers as they meet. "What do you want?"
"I don't," Lucy says. "I mean, I don't want anything. I was just... the bathroom."
"Hmph," Vicky growls.
Lucy isn't sure if it's a good idea or not, but she doesn't want to make things even uglier if word got around that they were having this party and Vicky hadn't been invited. This is a party for all the graduates, after all. "You know," Lucy says. "We're having a party over at Dallas's place, for graduation, if you want to come."

"Not his," Lucy says. "It's for everybody, so it's kind of yours too. And since you're..."
"You mean, since my parents shipped me off, since I'm alone here and pathetic, is that what you mean?"
"No, I didn't..." Lucy's voice trails off. Rather than try to explain herself or remedy the situation, she just turns to go.

Or maybe it isn't so silly, because this time Lucy hears footsteps behind her, quick ones.

Lucy is stunned, the shock stinging her eyes. Very few people have ever been angry with her, nobody's ever disliked her, and never in her life has she ever inspired disgust! She's speechless.
But Vicky continues, "Do you know that it takes everything I have in me not to rip your hair out, every, single, day! He was the one good thing that ever happened to me! This is not the kind of person I am! I'm not supposed to feel so angry! But I can say this now, since I won't have to be around here looking at you anymore - you disgust me!"

"Lucy is my business," Summer says. "This is still about Dallas, isn't it? Would you get over it already? It's been two years!"
Sarah also hears the shouting and runs eagerly into the courtyard.

"My boyfriend went to war!"
"You ran him off to war," Vicky says, thrusting her finger at Summer's face. "You're a mess! He'd rather go off to war than deal with you!"

"Cat fight!" Sarah yells, though she doesn't even need to. The fight announces itself with their shouts and screams echoing off the courtyard walls.
Summer and Vicky grapple at hair and clothing. Summer lands a punch to Vicky's cheekbone, Vicky digs into her shoulder with freshly manicured claws.

Sarah stops cringing to see who she was talking to, and that's when she notices Dallas, and the look of honest appreciation on his face. "Oh," she says. She sees what he sees, Summer and Vicky, two beautiful girls, grappling at each other. "We should do something."

Vicky stops. "You said what?"
Summer screams, fighting harder against Sarah's arm. But Sarah holds steady until Summer stops fighting, taking a moment before she lets go, to let Vicky get away. For these few sweet moments, Sarah Harris is holding Summer Phoenix, the taut muscle underneath petal-soft skin, the intoxicating scent of perfume mixed with adrenaline.

***

Summer's grandmother brings a salad and dessert, and Lucy's parents bring a gift for Dallas and promise that Lucy can stay out until 1:00 if she wants. And everyone does silly dances to old cheesey music, and the Deppiesses and Harrises and Phoenixes all have a good time together.

"No," Lucy says. "I don't like her. She's a bitch."
"Wow," Summer says. "Did you just swear?"
"Just a little," Lucy says.

Lucy stops chewing. "Who?"
"Tyler, I mean. Do you worry that Dallas will, while he's gone? I mean, have you guys talked about the rules?"
"What rules?"
"You have to talk about the rules," Summer says.

Lucy holds a bite of her fruit salad, hovering above her plate. "I don't know what the rules are. What are they supposed to be?"
"Whatever you both want," Summer says. "Both, together. You have to decide it together."
***

He can't even fathom how he might show his appreciation, but he offers, "You should take the car when I go."

He taught her to drive in it, even though she's a terrible driver. "It's our car," he says. "I mean, you helped build it. It's not like I can take it with me."

"I'm coming back," he says.
There is rarely a moment of silence in this house, between his parents and his sisters and his dog. Soon they hear footsteps padding towards the room.

"Thank you, Lucy," his mother says. "You did a beautiful job on the party."
Dallas is stunned for a moment, and it takes him some time to find out why. It isn't that his parents are in pajamas that feels strange. "Strange" is even the wrong word though, it's the opposite of strange, which would be "comfortable." And comfortable is unusual in this family, who are never comfortable around strangers. It takes him a moment to realize, Lucy is the farthest thing from a stranger around here.

This realization is something like terror as it hits him. Dallas knows a lot of things, and he knows this: that she is it for him, forever, and forever, and forever.
But she's still so young, not even seventeen yet. He's barely even a man himself, but he knows, and he thinks she does too. He wants to say it, but he can hardly even piece the words together. He can hardly form it into one coherent thought, since it's everything he knows.

She takes hold of one, so slick from nerves that she almost loses it. She asks him, "What is it?"
"It's nothing," he says.

"It's nothing," he says again.
"Well you've got a few weeks week to decide if you want to tell me or not."
"Don't worry," he says. "It's okay. It's nothing." But she always knows.
And she's right, what he's feeling right now, it's not nothing. It's definitely, positively, something.

notes: so again, I had so many good outtakes that I'll post them in another entry following this one. (ETA: outtakes and gameplay notes here.)
Sarah has her high school makeover, by the way, in case you didn't recognize her. She'll be a high school freshman in the fall. *sigh* They grow up so fast!
And like with college graduation, I'll post the teen to YA transitions in their May graduation update. They still don't start classes until August, so we'll consider this as something of college orientation day...

Wow, oh wow. The second Vicky went after Lucy, I couldn't stop reading. THEN she went after Summer in the cruelest way possible. I loved the "Oh hell no" right before Summer pounced because I was thinking that in my head too. XD
ReplyDeletePoor Vicky. I can't help feeling horribly sorry for her, even if she is really mean. Even if Lucy has a point, she kinda is a bitch (and she made Lucy curse-- that's a strong indicator right there of how bad Vicky is).
And Summer's cheering section-- LOL. That was a cute visual.
I can't wait to see these guys in college! Vicky is really interesting to read about; I'm torn between feeling sorry for her and wanting to punch her in the face. I hope she finds someone in college and gets over all this high school drama.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love Dallas and Lucy! They are so adorable, I started tearing up when I read the last bit when they're at his house after the party. They really belong together, and I hope their relationship is okay while he's away.
You know I kinda like Vicky. Maybe it's because we share some form of a name or because we both hate the sweet kind girl that never swear I don't know.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't mean I hate Lucy. She just gave me a toothache. I do love her though.Yeah I'm probably going to get hated for that.
I do appreciate a girlfight especially when it's two hot girls.
I agree with Sarah, I'm stuck between feeling sorry for Vicky and wanting to punch her in the face. At least Summer took care of that second part for us, LOL. ;) I do feel sorry for her and I hope she meets someone in college that will make her finally move on from Dallas. Yes, Dallas is sweet and adorable and will probably be successful and a great husband and father one day, but he's not the only boy like that in the world, Vicky! She just needs to find her own Dallas that's really meant for her.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, what she said to Lucy and Summer was pretty harsh. She kind of deserved the beatdown, but at least she said what she needed to say. Hopefully it's the start of her healing and moving forward!
I love that Dallas's parents see Lucy as family and are comfortable with her. Even they know Lucy and Dallas are meant to be. ;)
Lunar, Vicky was really pulling out the big guns, wasn't she? Maybe not a smart move since she and Summer are in the same dorm next semester (Hahahahah!!!).
ReplyDeleteSarah, she does make it confusing to feel sorry for her, doesn't she? lol! That's what I'm going for with her character though, so I'm glad you're torn ;)
Heart-farts for Lucy and Dallas! :)
Victoria, Lucy kind of gives me a toothache sometimes too, but you know, I gotta let her be who she is ;)
I think most people in high school (or adulthood even, for that matter) are irritated by the sweet, perfect, popular, good girls (or any combination of those things). At first glance they always seem to have it all, but that usually isn't the case when you get to know them better.
Shana, lol, I have to admit to enjoying that fight just a bit ;) That's a good point, maybe Vicky just needed to get some things said.
I'm on Vicky's side with this one, sure, she's a right witch, but I don't see anyone bothering to even try to give her a hand. And Lucy, well... Not everyone's going to like you, that's life and I think she needed to experience that. (That and there's something very wrong (to me) about people who have never experienced being disliked.) Didn't like Summer much in this either, but then I've been a bit anti-Summer since the whole break-up mess, not all her fault but... Yeah, I can't help but feel occasionally that she needs to be taken down a notch... Then you write something really sweet with her and I forget all about it xD
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, one of my best friends is a "Lucy" she's awesome, in every way, but she's also very flawed. Still, I -know- her, I don't know Lucy! Lol xD
That and the angry and angsty ones are always a bit more fun in my head :P
Vicky reminds me a little of Jodie, because she's beautiful but never smiles, but Jodie's caring and loving underneath it all. Vicky's just mad all the time. But I like her! If I was up against a Lucy or Summer in high school and everyone sided with them, I would be really mad too!
ReplyDeleteBoth of them deserved it, a little. It really wasn't Summer's business to butt in like that.
Cat fight! What an eventful graduation. I was surprised that Summer went for it like she did but Vicky really did deserve it seeing as Lucy was just trying to be nice and all.
ReplyDeleteI feel a bit for Dallas, that moment when you know someone is it is definitely one of the scariest feelings. I hope he tells her before he goes.
I think I might read your posts all the wrong way. I do comprehend the big idea behind the post-this is graduation day-but I always get distracted, not distracted, but entranced by the little details-like Sarah's little crush on Summer and her choice of clothing and hairstyles. The deeper lines in Meadow's face and how her time might be close even the interaction of Dallas's parents and his father's comfort about his alien hertiage in spite of the war.
ReplyDeleteOh, this was so great! I loved Summer's cheer squad - so cute.
ReplyDeleteI did feel a little bad for Vicky but what she said to Summer was a low blow and I've always been a Lucy fan. Speaking of Lucy...DALLAS! Say it, boy! They both know it but they need to say it!
Summer's "I'm gonna eat your fucking head!" made me LOL for real. I loved sweet little Lucy actually using a profanity too!
I love how they all look as adults, by the way, with Dallas in the back looking all nervous. Summer's dress is so great - I'm saving that one for my Maia Novak when she goes off to college.
Valneanne, I think you're on to something about Lucy needing this - maybe not so much *needing* it, but it was certainly inevitable. She is very sheltered, and naive, and protected in her little bubble of friends, and is probably in store for quite the shocker now that they've all moved on from high school. Everyone is flawed in one way or another, even Lucy.
ReplyDeletebbop, yes, I see some of Jodie in Vicky. I think the coldness is more in Jodie's nature though, while Vicky used to be quite sweet at one point, before the world started to shit on her, lol!
carnaxa, Summer surprised me a bit too, lol! But man, when Vicky pulled out that last line, I just couldn't hold her back ;)
And yes, poor Dallas. I'm really putting the poor boy through hell! And right before he's about to leave too!
Apple, I think it's wonderful you read these entries so closely! I love it when you guys notice all the little details I include, and I think that is just how I hope you'll read them - comprehending the big picture, while absorbing all the little details.
I think I tend to write the kind of stories I like to read, which are rich and slow reads rather than quick and plotty, if that makes any sense.
So, no, I think you're doing it exactly right :)
Carla, lol! We'll see if he can work up the courage ;)
Summer's line was my favorite of the whole piece, lol! I was rolling on the floor when I wrote that - you know how when you're that angry, you just say the most ridiculous things!
I love that dress too! I've had that in mind for her for a while now!
Just when I was starting to feel sorry for Vicky, she goes right back to being a b*tch. I can understand where she's coming from. I've experienced unrequited love, and I agree "Lucys" can be irritating...even though I consider myself a "Lucy" too. ;) I'm getting concerned for Vicky's well-being. She needs to let Dallas go so that she can get her heart ready for a guy who wants her.
ReplyDeleteI loved Summer's "Oh, hell no!" I can imagine the internal struggle she felt with trying to be nice to Vicky and take the high road, and finally saying "Eff it, the bee-yoch has it coming!" :)
Apple Valley's comment about Meadow raises a question for me. How do you handle death by old age with your aging/calendar system? If I understand correctly, you have aging off and you manually age up the Sims at the end of their play session or at the end of the round if they are not featured in an entry. Is that right?
ReplyDeleteSo when it comes to death by old age, what do you do if someone happens to expire when you pop in their house just to age them up? And how do you handle people like Meadow who you play? Do you turn aging on while you play her and see if Grimmy comes?
I hope this question made sense. I had a hard time phrasing it! :)
I can.not.wait to see those girls at college together! I hope Vicky can find someone better than Dallas for herself, and move on though.
ReplyDeleteLoved the fight! And how Sarah tackled her back.
such a Lucy/Dallas fan, and the whole convo with summer about rules, so true and terrifying to broach.
Damn Vicky. It really is time to get over it. Even if you can't get over the feelings, you can't keep thinking the world owes you. You have to face facts that Dallas wasn't as right for you as you wanted him to be.
ReplyDeletePoor Meadow is really looking her age.
Summer totally kicks ass! I love an ass-kicking female!
This is about to be the longest reply ever:
ReplyDeleteHere's a question for you all, since I like to write these characters with extreme character traits (bitter, cold, selfish, etc.) - those aren't extreme, I suppose, but just unfavorable? Anyway, at what point does it stop being entertaining and instead become annoying?
I ask this not just for the sake of these LH stories, but because one of the main characters in my novel has some unfavorable character tendencies, similar to what you might find in some of my LH girls.
I know the other extreme, having no unfavorable character traits, is equally as annoying, as Lucy is trying to prove, lol! (Lucy isn't perfect either, she just hasn't really been tested yet.)
I guess my question is, as a reader, how much of your enjoyment is tied to the likability of a character. And can you still enjoy the story of a character you don't like? Or what makes you like the characters you do like, or dislike the characters you dislike?
You guys are probably like, "Dude, too many questions! I'm just here to read a story!" That's okay too :)
Anyway...
snarky, that's a very good point, for all the time Vicky spends pining over Dallas, she's missing out on the guys she could be with.
I haven't had an elder death since I started the whole real-time Simming thing. I think I might have some coming up soon though. (And lol! Meadow is offended that y'all are calling her old! She's getting there, but she's only 67 I think.)
I think what I'll do is play and age them normally as they're scheduled to be played, and if their time runs out in that month, then that's when they'll go. If not, then they'll get a sort of reprieve until their next turn.
maisie, it's going to be a rough time at Frosh Hall next semester, lol! And yes, now that you mention it, it is going to be a terrifying discussion for D/L to have! I don't know how they'll do it, lol!
petalbrook, I think it's time too. Hopefully Summer knocked it out of her good enough ;)
All, Ah-ha! And it just dawns on me exactly what Vicky *needs*! She doesn't know it yet, but I do ;)
ReplyDeleteLaura, you pose a great question. I'm going to borrow a phrase from the romance novel world, and say that a story becomes annoying to me when a character does something that is TSTL (too stupid to live). For example, as often happens in a romantic suspense novel, the hero has warned the heroine that going to place X or confronting person Y is dangerous, and she goes ahead and does it anyway. She gets herself into an unnecessary perilous situation that of course requires the hero to come to the rescue. Never understood how the hero could go on to fall in love with such a bonehead!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, characters can have annoying traits, that makes them human. What is important to me is that the things they do make sense given their personality and motivation. Some of your characters that have "personality flaws" are some of my favorite. I'm calling you out, Jodie! My nickname isn't "snaryksims" by accident, I love Jodie's snarkiness. Dallas and Lucy are also my favorites too, at the same time I feel some sympathy for Vicky.
So to answer your question, I don't have to like a character to enjoy a book. The character's actions and motivations just have to make sense.
snarky, thanks for thinking about this with me! :)
ReplyDeleteTSTL, lol! This reminds me of horror movies, where there's some pretty and vacant girl who just has to open that door - and usually *does* end up getting killed. So if they're TSTL, maybe we should let them die, lol!
Thanks for this: "Anyway, characters can have annoying traits, that makes them human. What is important to me is that the things they do make sense given their personality and motivation."
That's a very good tip!
Jodie is one of my favorites too! She's always so much fun to write, and she has a story coming up that I can't wait to do :)
And I just would like to add (IMHO) that it's okay to have extreme/annoying cahracters, as long as they are not the main character, and there are other likeable characters to root for and balance it out.
ReplyDeleteI'll give you a totally random example that made me think of this, on Survivor Samoa one of the people (Russel H) is horrible, mean, arrogant, and a liar. I have no interest in watching him whatsoever. And they give him way too much airtime. But I deal with it because its my favorite show (like LH is one of my favorite blogs) and the other people who are kind, smart, and nice make up for it.
Sorry if it's too long/irrelevent! LOL
bbop, thank you, that is helpful! I know just what you mean. I agree, there has to be a good balance of characters of all types. My personal pet peeve is when people write those stories where EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER is dark/brooding/tortured and not a single one of them ever smiles, lol! How realistic is that?
ReplyDeleteThank you, good points! :)
I like Vicky and I feel bad for her. She's like a lost girl, forgotten and kinda unappreciated. I hope she can find her way in college but sometimes its hard especially if you have people from high school following you there.
ReplyDeleteHeredon, I hope she's able to make a fresh start in college too, we'll see... :)
ReplyDeletevery interesting I always like that statement peanuts lucy its not character a flaw its a character trait........
ReplyDeleteyeah whetever
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, hmmm, wasn't sure if this was spam or not. But it almost seems to make sense... you know, almost. So yeah, ummm, whatever?
ReplyDelete
