first, part 1

June 2083 - Charlie Roseland and Natalia Deppiesse are 13, Gabby Roseland is 4.

It's summer, finally. Charlie is just hanging out in front of his house, with his sister, doing what kids do on these long, sweaty days, which is waiting for something to happen. Nothing is happening here. He can't even score some free lemonade from his baby sister!

"That'll be a dollar ninety-five," Gabby says. "Just like everybody else."

His mother calls him inside, loud at first, and then as he enters the room, transforming into something mocking and lyrical, "Charlie, phone's for you... it's Natalia."

"Oh my God, Mom," he says, cringing. "Could you be any more lame?"

He waits until both parents are well out of range, so he can talk to Natty about how bored they are, in privacy.

"My parents are making us go to some stupid Lakeshore Days festival," he tells her. "For the new marina."

"I love boats," she says.

"You do?"

"Um, sure."

He feels suddenly nervous. He and Natty spent every day of their sixth and seventh grade year together, and some days after, so he doesn't know why it feels so weird to ask her, "Do you wanna, like, come out with us?"

She says, yes, of course. He knew she would. Even a stupid Lakeshore Days festival is better than being bored.

Charlie is beyond glad she called, because otherwise he'd be stuck here with his parents, and his baby sister, and the human-freaking-statue! They don't even have a boat, but his parents just wish they had one. So they'll stand down by the docks fawning over other people's boats, which is the point of this whole festival. His father often tells him, "The Lake County area has been sorely lacking in good marina space."

"Okay, Dad," Charlie would say. Charlie thinks his dad is a dork, not nearly as cool as Natty's dad.

He'd like to show off his rocket-arm, since Natty sits down to watch. But his sister is only four and he doesn't figure she can catch that well yet. His rocket-arm is not very rocket-like anyway, but he's working on that.

And when she's watching, he can't help but feel all stupid and smiley. She's contagious, with her big smile and perfect teeth.

He doesn't know what to do with these feelings, especially with his little sister around.

Gabby asks her, "Do you want to paint your face with me?"

"Um, okay," she says.

"Good, and you can go first," Gabby says.

Then she turns to her brother. "Charlie?"

"No," he says. "No way!"

Natalia goes first, to show Gabby that this is perfectly safe. Even if she isn't sure. This guy painting faces couldn't have had more face painting experience than a high school art class!

"See, you could do that," Charlie tells his sister as Natty's face goes up in a puff of pink powder.

It isn't quite what anyone expected.

But Natty tries to hold back her disappointment in front of Gabby.

"No worries," she says. "It's totally supposed to look like this!"

Gabby sits down next.

Charlie says to high school art guy, "Screw it up, and I'll smear your face in that paint."

Everyone is pleased, though Charlie wouldn't have minded having an excuse to smear that guy's face in some paint.

"Thanks for doing that," Charlie says, grinning at her. "But you know if you wash it off now, you'll hurt her feelings."

"It's not that funny," Natty says.

"It's pretty funny," he says.

The festival's opening night performance is slow. There's only one single guy rocking out an electric bass solo, and just a few people watching, only three if you don't count Charlie and his family.

Charlie's parents are talking about how the Governor only started the Marina project because she wants to be reelected, but then, of course she did, because Governors always try to pull out some fancy project near the end of their term so they can get reelected.

Charlie isn't much interested in politics, but the new marina isn't bad. In fact, he does wish his parents had a boat of their own to take out onto the lake.

Charlie picks a spot, not too near his family, and they sit down. His dad also told him the story of this house, and why it stood here unoccupied for so long. His dad knows a lot of stories, being a history teacher and all.

"It was built by some dude who wanted to impress his wife," Charlie says. "She was a snob."

"She probably wasn't," Natty says. "Why are you gonna take his side?"

"Dude, it's a story," Charlie says. "So he spent all the money he had on this house, and they lived in it while he was building it for her. He only got about half-way finished, and then she left him. And the house has been empty ever since."

Natty looks at him all starry-eyed. She sighs. "It's kind of romantic."

"Except that it's not, because she left him," he says.

"Well yeah," she says. "It would have been romantic if she hadn't left him."

It's been a couple weeks now that her dad has been gone. He has no idea what that must be like. "You can talk to my dad, if you want," he offers. "I know he's not as cool as your dad, but if you need to talk to a dad about something."

"About what?"

"I don't know, whatever you need to talk to a dad about?"

"Hey, you wanna go somewhere?"

"Where?"

"I don't know," he says. "Somewhere else."

Her hand is right there, just inches from his own fingers as he moves to get up. Their hands even knocked into each other, accidentally, once, while they were talking. But his parents are also right there, and his little sister, so he almost takes her hand, but he doesn't.

They think about exploring the house, but the rooms are mostly empty, and off limits anyway, except for the bathrooms and the tea room. There's no popcorn or cotton candy at this festival, and unfortunately no hot dogs. They'd both kill for a hot dog right now, the good festival kind, served in those paper boats, with a toasted bun, relish, and mustard. They're practically salivating for one!

But instead there's just the tea room, which is airy and formal. Why they call it the tea room is beyond either of their imaginations, because there's no tea served in it. Instead of hot dogs, they settle on salad, and the fancy kind of Jello, with fruit and cream mixed in.

"Do you wanna come over and swim this week?" Natty asks.

"You're not going to invite that Liza girl, are you? I hate her!"

"Why would I invite Liza?"

"I don't know, she's always hanging around Fiona. Is Fiona coming?"

"Do you want Fiona to come?"

"No," he says. "I don't care if Fiona comes."

They aren't very impressed by the festival, and especially aren't very impressed by this statue man. "He doesn't do anything," Natty says. "And we're supposed to tip him?"

"I'm not tipping him," Charlie says. They wait. They examine him a little closer.

And then he moves. Natty shrieks, throwing her hands up. She turns hard and runs.

Charlie chases after her, and she doesn't stop until they're half-way across the field.

"Didn't you know he moved?"

"I knew," she says. "But then I forgot."

They both laugh. He loves her laugh, her contagious and bright smile. He doesn't know what to do with these feelings. He knows what he wants to do, but he never gets it right.

She braces herself as he puts his arm around her, preparing for impact.

Noogied.

He never does it very hard, and he doesn't even mess up her hair anymore. It's more like an excuse to hold her, when what he really wants to do is hug her.

But he's starting to think she would like an actual hug more. "I'm sorry," he says. "I guess your face paint all came off."

"It's all on your shirt," she says.

"I didn't mean to hurt you."

"You didn't," she says, still a little edge in her voice.

He feels stupid, that wasn't what he meant to do at all.

"I'm sorry," he says.

"You already said that."

"It wasn't what I meant to do," he says.

She starts to smile. "Really?"

He reaches his hand behind her back, pulling her lightly toward him. She's still smiling, wide, cheesy, Natty-patty-smile. She doesn't look into his eyes, but that's okay because they both close their eyes then, as he leans in to kiss her, which he's been meaning to do for a very long time.

It lasts exactly eight seconds, which he figures is pretty good for a first kiss, because if it wasn't, she'd probably want to stop at like, two seconds, or something.

Only after they pull apart do they realize that the rain has started, misting down from the sky. His parents are at the car and calling them. So they go, and his hand brushes past hers, accidentally, like the first night they met, almost two years ago, when he spent the long ride back home from Bluewater willing himself to hold her hand. Like so many times in between.

This time, he holds it.

*******

notes: the night they met, in case you feel like being nostalgic ;)

I'm digging back and trying to remember what it's like to be almost fourteen, lol! Such a weird, in-between kind of age. It's probably far beyond my capacities to imagine what it's like to be a fourteen year-old boy, lol, but my husband tells stories.

  1. That was so cute! I can relate to Natalia, I had my first kiss when I was 13 lol. It was at a party though, but it was during the summer so it's pretty much the same =P

When I want to build up businesses quickly, I use the Career Adjuster that comes with the Insimenator. Theres an option to maximize loyalty of everyone who's on the lot at that moment. If you click that option a few times, the business builds up quickly. I hope that helps =]

  2. Non-Anon, thank you! I'll definitely check that out! Of all the hundreds of mods I have, Insim is the one I don't have, since I have so many that do pretty much the same things. But I would download it for just that feature alone!

I wonder if everybody has their first kiss in the summertime? Mine was. I think summer is just such a automatically romantic first-kiss kind of time :)

and all, sorry, I keep revising this, flip-flopping on whether to use Natalia or Natty in narration. Just so you don't think you're going crazy if you've seen it change, or if it changes again, lol! I guess I should use Natty, since nobody calls her Natalia hardly at all anymore. Hmmm... LOL, random insignificant questions ;)

  3. You know, over at Sim Wardrobe, you can get the customer limit adjuster. It will let you tell it how many sims you want on the lot regardless of the business level.

Also comes in handy for teen hang outs when used in conjunction with the visitor controller, and weddings when you want a large town turn out.

Okay, this was sweet, but not toothache sweet. I don't know much about 14 year old boys, but I thought it was great. Definitely seemed to take in the details a boy would notice.

Also loved the boat festival. So creative. And the story behind the house! Always so jealous of the history you manage in your neighborhood.

  4. ROFL @ Luara's post "Thou shalt not comment in text speak!"

Natalia and Charlie are very cute. I wish I could remember what it was like at 13 and 14, but I don't think I can think back that far. LOL

Non-Anon, thanks for the tip! I'll have to use that!

  5. I think The Lunar Fox has a point; the detail and history you manage in your hood, is someting to be jealous about! I absolutely love it! If I do something like that, I always forget to write it down, and in a next post it's never the same (I hope this makes sense, I just can't put it any beter)

I think you got the 14-year old boy rather well, strugling with his love feelings, and trying to be a though boy all at the same time!
Natalia and Charlie are so sweet together.

  6. The lot looks great! A little sad on the history of the house, but tres cool to have that become something historical.

These two are super cute. Ditto on the star loyalty from Insim, I use that on the lots I don't "play" so that it's not dead when we visit. I love Insim. *heart farts*

  7. Natalia and Charlie are cute. Young love is so sweet. You can get around the people limit by using Paladin's Customer Limit Adjuster. It helps a lot.

  8. Aw, this was so sweet. My first kiss was in the summertime too, but I was eleven and it was at my best friend's birthday party. The guy is now living with his boyfriend two hours away. I like to think that I wasn't such a horrible kisser that I turned him gay AND drove him out of town, LOL! (Seriously though, he's still one of my best friends so I have fond memories of our very awkward first kiss.)

I like the boat festival and the history behind the house. Thanks to the other commenters for the tips on how to get more customers! I've been annoyed by that too when I have temporary businesses for events.

  9. Oh, Shana LOL at your first kiss, because mine was in the summer time when I was 13 at sleepaway camp. It was very awkward. And with a girl who is now a lesbian, lol! It was so bad I seriously think I turned her gay!

And by the way Laura, I'm a 16 year old boy now, and I think you captured a 14 year old boy's thoughts very well. I always felt like I was talking to girls the wrong way or doing something silly.

Natty and Charlie's first kiss was perfect! And I love the history of your neighborhood. I need to see how well Madison stuck to her campaign promises before I vote for her. But I think she did a good job, and Ally Shultz is SO BIG FOREHEADED!!!

And is LOL okay to say? I removed my other text speak. :D

  10. Aw, so sweet! Natalia is such a cutie and I loved Charlie finally holding her hand at the end. That was even cuter than the actual kiss, if that's possible!

I definitely recommend the Customer Limit Adjuster as well. That really boosts the amount of people you'll get coming to your lot. I use it mostly because the game seems to think my computer can't handle lots of people on my businesses but it might work well for your situation too.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wow, comments, lol! You guys are fast today ;)

Lunar, oooh, that customer limit adjuster sounds good too! I'm glad Charlie seemed boyish enough. The boat festival is probably a Michigan thing, lol! Man, you don't get between Great Lakes people and their boats! LOL!

And why are you jealous? Your Tierra de Legado has a TON of history in it, easily as much as mine! But anyway, thank you! :)

Riverdale, the memories are starting to get a bit fuzzy, but I think I still remember it pretty well - such a weird and magical time :)

Tanja, thank you! The history just comes from playing the hood for so long. And you know, these stories I'm writing now will also be history to future stories as well.

maisie, thanks! Cody Bradshaw had a very complicated life, lol! He made quite a few messes of himself before he moved away. It was a very pretty house though, and even looks kind of "vintage" if you know what I mean.

Heredon, thanks, they like each other a lot! :)

Shana, oh wow! LOL! How neat though that you're still friends with him!

bbop, thanks! It's great to get a guy's perspective on this, and I'm glad Charlie seemed authentic. I'm not sure if I have many, if any at all, other male readers around here.

And yes, I "say" LOL all the time! And OMG too! It's nothing any of you guys did that made me post that, but you would definitely know it if you saw it ;)

Carla, thanks! I love hand-holding, and I agree, it's a very underrated intimacy :) I'm going to have to look at that Customer Limit Adjuster, it sounds handy!

  12. I love the historical reference in your neighborhood as well, very nice how there is this history of Lakeside Heights that we don't know about since we joined the blog in the middle of things.

  13. I seem to remember 13-14 y/o boys being rather grabby, but it could just be that those were the kind of boys that I was *eyeroll* fortunate enough to meet when I was that age.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That is adorable! Charlie and his family are so cute. I really like that in your neighborhood there's a lot of variety in the people and the kinds of things going on in their lives. After all of the Summer/Beau and Dallas/Lucy heartbreak, it's nice to read about Charlie and Natty's young love.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Apple, thanks! It's been great having a little bit of momentum behind the stories before I started blogging. It makes them feel "richer" for me, and thus easier to write. I'll definitely do the same again for whatever my next Sims project is after this :)

petalbrook, lol! I hardly even talked to a boy until I was 15, so they didn't have a chance to grab at me ;) But yes, definitely by 15 they were grabby, probably because that was the only chance they had at feeling anything, lol!

Sarah, it has been a pretty heartbreaking "chapter" so far, overall, hasn't it? The next one is a little bit lighter though. Weird, I think my stories tend to go in cycles like that.

I'm glad you like the variety - I promise I'll never write a story where everybody is all depressed, all the time, and I'll probably never write one where everybody is cheesy happy either :)

  16. How cute! I was waiting a long time for Natty and Charlie to kiss. If it was my game I would force them to kiss a long time ago.

Gabby is too cute for words!

    ReplyDelete
  17. First, you made me hungry for hot dogs. I felt my mouth water when you described that bit.

I was wondering if they would kiss, I was hoping and I was glad they did. And I think you got into the mind of a fourteen year old boy very well.

I really love the way you tell their stories, I know I've already told you that but I really find myself drawn into their stories.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Victoria, willpower, lol! I had to let them be shy and obnoxious first ;)

    Carnaxa, awww, thank you! :)

I know, I could totally go for a hot dog now too!!!

  19. Sorry I haven't been around, Laura! NaNoWriMo is a troublesome mistress and well, it hasn't been a good month, LOL. At all!

I would have commented while I caught up, but I wanted to catch up. Young romance is so sweet. It's nice to see them slowly slipping into that sort of awkward like stage. :) The "face painting" was cute, too, LOL!

The customer limit thing is VERY nice. I use it because there is a very low limit set, despite what your PC can handle, so its accessible to everyone. So, I crank mine up... cough.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Mao, no worries! Yes, NaNo is troublesome this year for sure! I always wanted to find a use for those face paints, lol! :)

All, part 2 is feeling a bit like a bad hair day, (or it might just be my brain, lol!), but it's in the works... soon enough.

  21. With Insimenator you have a business adjuster

  22. Well decided to delurk and say hi. And that I love this blog. You know, all the typical things new readers say (Um apart from your biggest fan, that is;)

Seriously though, this really is like a soap opera except it's more realistic. I'm loving the war storyline and I'm also loving Summer and Lucy's storylines. Jodie just makes me laugh but then I sorta like coldness lol.

I decided to delurk here because I was feeling nostalgic. When I started reading last week, Natalia and gang were only 5 or so and now they're teens *sniffle*

    I'm gonna keep reading now:)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Joseph, very nice to hear from you! Thank you, and I'm glad you're enjoying it so far! :)

Yes, I love the soap opera format - not so much soap opera storylines though, lol! I think I tend to compare this a lot more to some of the night time dramas, like Grey's Anatomy, with its rotating storylines and big cast of characters. I'm definitely influenced by TV shows like that.

Ah yes, those first years went by so fast, huh? I love reading the old stories over again and feeling nostalgic too sometimes!

I'm glad you delurked! Hope you enjoy the rest of the story! :)
