Soundtrack: "Because of You," by Kelly Clarkson.

"I wanna show you something," Ryanne says.

Summer laughs out loud. "You would like this music theory class I'm taking at school. We have to learn an instrument." Summer pauses. "I'm a percussionist."
"What does that mean?"
Summer grins. "It means drums."

"No, they didn't send me at all. I just wanna know."
Dark utility closets flash to mind, and Angelo Shaw. She feels like such an idiot that she believed him, that they wouldn't get caught. "I only did it once."
"What did you do?"
"He said you can't get pregnant like that."
"Who said?"
"Angelo," Ryanne says. "But it was just one time, and we got caught. But it's not a big deal - you can't get pregnant like that. You can't."

"You used to do it to Tyler, and he loved you."
Her sister's mouth hangs open. "How do you-...?"
An ear to the wall, an eye at the crack beside the door, the soft sounds of young love drifting through her open window on a warm summer breeze. How else does a motherless girl learn anything about the world? Summer stalls, then she speaks. "That's... different. And hell, not when I was thirteen!"

The two of them are quiet. So quiet they can hear the muffled sounds of their father and Piper downstairs, cooing and cuddling each other. Or whatever it is they do. Just as fast as the lecture had started, Summer changes the topic again. "Hey, you wanna see something?"
Summer leaps up from the floor, whipping her dress high, tucking it up under her armpits to expose her back.

"Yeah, like a bitch," Summer says.
"It's so cool," Ryanne says. "I want one."
"When you're older," Summer says, moving her dress back down. "What would you get?" Ryanne starts to think, images filling her head. So many ideas. So many possibilities. But before Ryanne can answer, Summer's gaze has drifted to the corner and she moves quickly to whatever it is she's found.
A dollhouse.

"Yeah," Ryanne says. "We found it in the attic when we moved again. I mean, they had to put it somewhere, I'll probably throw it out or something."
"No, don't." Summer picks up the furniture, the plastic tiny dinnerware. She finds a strewn shoe and returns it to its needy foot.
Ryanne lowers herself along the wall beside the dollhouse.
"It's weird here," Ryanne says. "It's like, normal. But not."

Summer finally adds, "Because I think nobody knows what to say about it."
Ryanne doesn't know what to say either. Especially not right now. Maybe later she would, but not now. Instead she says, "You should stay over, like a sleepover. You can sleep in my bed and I'll sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor. Do you remember when we lived in that little condo, and we had to share a room for a while? Do you remember when we had camp-outs in our sleeping bags on the floor?"
Summer tilts her head, lips curling into so slight a smile. It felt like an apology. "Yeah, I remember," she says. "But I have class in the morning, and some homework to finish up tonight. I actually need to get going. Maybe on the weekend?"

"Love you too," Ryanne says.

It's so wonderful to read about Summer and Ryanne's relationship, now that Ryanne is 13. I am so, so glad she has Summer, especially seeing her mother isn't around. She's not a substitute (and there's a ton of stuff girls don't often want to talk to their mums about anyway) but it must be nice for Ryanne to have someone to look up to and someone she has a shared experience with.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I read this like three or four times in a row, just taking it all in and looking at the pictures. I'm loving this story set so far. :D
I read this earlier but had to rush off to school. Thank god school finished early. So I'll comment now.
ReplyDeleteI have to echo everything Carla said about Summer and Ryanne's relationship. I think Summer is probably the right person for Ryanne to go to, and possibly the only one stopping Ryanne from getting out of control.
I was just thinking the other day that the Phoenix clan is a bit doomed with the mother's death (can't remember her name) and Nessa's cancer. And I completely forgot about Hayden's depression.
What the whole clan needs is just to sit down and have a talk about everything. Yes it's hard but it's the only way. And Micah & Sophie are probably the right people to do this.
I saw on the schedule that Nessa has an interview coming up soon. I hope she's recovering well. The poor girl is really going through a lot at the moment.
This was a really nice story post to wake up to this morning. No tragedy, no heartbreak. Just two sisters having a heart-to-heart. Lovely.
Rhianna. That was her name! I knew it was similar to Ryanne.
ReplyDeleteSorry for spamming but apparently Blogger doesn't let you edit comments. (And yes I've only just found that out)
I thought this was a lovely post too. Great to see two sister's chatting openly.
ReplyDeleteRyanne seems to be the really rebellious type. Probably an understatement, yeah. lol But as the others said, it is great that she has her sister to talk about some of these things.
She needs to try and discover who or want sort of person she really wants to be though, I don't think copying her sister or anyone else for that matter is the way to go--but I guess she is only thirteen and still has a lot to learn.
Lovely shots and writing. Everything flows so nicely, you definitely have a way with words. *snickers* ;)
I'm glad Summer was there to talk with her sister and how it all bubbled to the surface about their family avoiding the issues and sweeping everything under the rug and not dealing with it.
ReplyDeleteActually - I'm not convinced that Ryanne is the rebellious type. I think she's lost and hurt and needs someone to hold onto - and all she's got is a sister who's there sometimes. She reacts in the way she thinks Summer does - it's total modelling on her surrogate mum. Not surprising with Hayden's depression.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah - not talking about death, depression and cancer is a great way of giving your children a dysfunctional life to have therapy for. :)
Love Ryanne and Summer's interactions. Very nice to see.
I love the way Ryanne and her sister relate. Summer is clearly the only thing she has to hold onto right now; she's a good sister. Ryanne is so relatable, so very 13 years old; full of questions in a world without the answers. For her it's a world where she's the only one who seems to remember anything and I can see how that would make a person feel as alone as she feels.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time reading this thread and I feel like a know all I need to because every emotion was captured so perfectly. Can't wait to read more about this family.
Carla awww, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it enough to read it over!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm waiting for one of you to say you noticed the one TS3 picture in there! ;)
I really loved making Ryanne's TS2 bedroom. I'm still working on her TS3 bedroom, which I'm finding lacking good posters and other odd trinkets, sadly. I keep making that an excuse to go on downloading sprees, but I'm gonna make my game explode, lol!
Joseph, Sophie and Micah do have a lot to do with how things have played out here - there were some hints of that in the New Year's post, but you'll get more of that in the next part as well.
Minimal heartbreak for a moment, huh? lol! ;) It felt good to write them a calm moment. It's not a true calm just yet, but I think they're beginning to understand what they need now to get there.
Jennifer, thank you! You're right, she's only thirteen, and has a lot of growing to do still, and at least some of this is just the normal teenage pushing of boundaries that kids will do. The other part of her experience is *far* from normal, so yes, she has a lot of forces causing turmoil in her life right now.
LOL, these stories probably are a bit more wordy than they used to be. After having just finished a very intense novel session, I suppose it bleeds over. ;)
Apple, they're both definitely feeling it now. And these conversations are tragically long overdue. I'm not sure how they might have done it differently, but they all probably made some missteps along the way.
Kiri, wow, great reading! You called it! Sometimes I wonder if you're secretly a therapist digging into my little imaginary people or something, lol!
And LMAO, you mean Hayden's not winning parent of the year here? ;)
Muze, thank you! Oh good, I'm glad to hear you could draw so much from this one entry! It's kind of neat how sometimes a simple conversation can carry the weight of a whole story.
Good point, it must be clear to them all how much Ryanne adores and relies on Summer. It might be interesting to explore how differently they all feel about that fact. ;)
I love Summer and Ryanne, and I want to see more of them together. It's a tough road that they both have been traveling on, and at least with Ryanne she has a older sister who can help her navigate.
ReplyDeleteAnd how much she looks up to Summer, I like how Summer is there for her sister. I think she sees a little bit of her in Ryanne at that age.
Given the shading on the arm - I'm guessing it's the back with the tattoo. But way to go for adding TS3 pictures in it!
ReplyDeleteRiverdale, you're very right on both parts. I suppose it's something Ryanne might be grateful for (if a thirteen year-old was capable of being grateful for anything, lol!), that she at least has a big sister to guide her through this.
ReplyDeleteThat's mean of me though - I'm sure there are very generous and humble thirteen year-olds in the world. I'm also sure Ryanne is not one of them, lol!
Kiri, awww, damn, you got me! The shadows gave it away, lol! Seems like my TS2 pics have much brighter highlights and darker shadows than TS3. I did think to match color tones and scene orientation, but I should have thought of the shadows! ;)
So many questions, but so few answers and even those are all hidden far away in a deepest darkest corners of the closet. It must be so difficult, so hard for her so I am so glad she has Summer. One can never substitute mother, but at least they have this relationship which seems strong and helps her somewhat to grow, somewhat to cope and find her own way to be strong. I just love their relationship, it is so unique somehow.

ReplyDeleteWhat a cute post! Ryanne definitely seems to have a great relationshp with Summer; a high admiration. I love that, since she doesn't have anyone else that she's close with, or can look up too.
ReplyDeleteGreat update! :)
Even though Summer couldn't stay the night, I felt like the chapter ended on a hopeful note because she would talk about the things no one else would, and that's what Ryanne wants.
ReplyDeleteRyanne's character really does capture that whole spirit of wanting to just grow up so you don't have to put up with the things you don't like, and just like those kids she has no idea that it's so much more complicated when you're older. She has this wonderful strange dichotomy going on in her--on the one hand she's still so young and naive, but then she's also experienced some very tragic things that have had a great impact on her personality.
This was a lovely look at Summer and Ryanne's relationship--wonderful!
How well written. I'm happy someone is willing to say something to Ryanne. It's a shame no one knows how to speak about it, except maybe in private and in whispers. I agree with what everyone else says, about Ryanne being curious and so very 13 years old. I can only imagine how many more questions she has, what other emotions she feels the need to hold back on. My biggest hope for her is that she and summer remain close.
ReplyDeleteSadly, as she gets older, I think it will only get harder for the whole family to communicate openly. Summer and Ryanne might be alright but as for Ryanne and her father (and possibly Piper, too), I'm afraid things will only get (more) strained and difficult to talk about.
I hope Summer keeps her word about next weekend. Ryanne definitely needs it.
I'm glad that Summer came and spent time with Ryanne. I feel bad for her, she must be so lonely, and making such bad decisions at such a young age. It was nice seeing the girls chat together, talking about heavy things, but also lighter things too. And I hope eventually that Ryanne can at least find Piper likable, maybe not a mother replacement, but she might like her for someone to talk to about girl things as she gets older and relationships become more prominent.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry I took FOREVER to respond to these! My brain's been fried from the start of school and everything. I think I'm better now, lol!
ReplyDeleteThank you all for being so patient! And for being such amazing readers! These comments are all so perceptive! You guys are the best! :D
Speechless, thank you! They do each give the other something they can't get from anyone else, I think. :)
Charleston, awww, you deleted your comment! Wasn't it you who said something about the possibilities? I liked that! ;)
coolkat, thank you! I'm glad they have each other too! :)
Rachel, "she has no idea that it's so much more complicated when you're older" <-- oh man, they never do, do they? lol! I remember that age so well!
You're right about the naive/tragic. I think she was too young at the time to really understand it all, but it made its impression on her just the same. Thank you!
Choco, thanks! Yes, hushes and whispers! Definitely, that's just how this family has always been. I only realized recently how frustrating that must be for Ryanne to grow up around.
Lucky for Ryanne, I don't think Summer communicates that same way.
Maisie, if she and Piper could become friends some day, I think that would be about the best we could hope for, lol! :)
