The Samantha Bradshaw Project

Flashback - Lake City, August 2073.

The night was so warm and humid even the hallway dripped sweat from a cold metal pipe above her head. In front of the building, some young men stood dribbling a basketball to madness in the late hours of the evening. Samantha knocked on the door to her best friend's apartment in the South End of Lake City.

Riley answered the door and waved her in.

"Hey," Chad said. "How was the trip?"

"It was great," Samantha said. "Really, clarifying."

Inside the single room apartment, their baby slept in the living room, her crib wedged tightly into a corner. Chad watched some football game, the sound on low, barely a whisper. He sat in a ragged garage sale Lazyboy in pajama pants.

"Don't put clothes on for your company or anything," Samantha said.

"Oh, don't worry, I won't," he said, flashing a cheesy grin in the dim fading light.

The girls went outside to talk, sitting down on the concrete, watching the neighborhood walk by. Samantha was just home from a vacation, but she wouldn't be here for long. She had just graduated from college, and her journalism degree left her wide open with possibilities and staying here was the least appealing of them.

They talked long into the evening like they used to back in high school, when their plans were simple and idyllic and full of promise. Their lives had taken them in different directions entirely since then, motherhood versus college, and that was only the start of it.

"Back from Japan, and already you're leaving again?" Riley sighed heavy into her knee. "God, I'm so jealous. Don't get yourself pregnant - that'll stop you really fast."

"You kind of need to be sleeping with someone for that," Samantha said.

Samantha laughed, not making fun, but out of solidarity. "You remember all those ideas we used to have about how our lives would turn out," Samantha said. "Nobody's life ever turns out the way they think it will."

"Yeah," Riley said.

Neither of them got what they thought they wanted. Unlike her friends, she had actually seen children in her future, but then, she saw Jack as sort of a contingent of that future, and that had hardly worked out as planned.

"I don't know when I'll be back," Samantha said.

Riley turned to her. "Do you know where you're going?"

Samantha shook her head. "Maybe I'll know when I get there."

There were dozens of people she wouldn't be saying goodbye to that night. Her mother who rejected her again and again, or that asshole Max, for being married and being such an unbelievable sleazebag.

And she wouldn't say goodbye to Jack - the thought of it was simply unfathomable. She'd never wanted to say goodbye in the first place. Even a year after the fact and the thought of him sent her heart aching all over again. It felt too good being away, away from those streets they walked together, away from the places where they grew up. The running away, further and further, felt like healing.

She went home to collect her things, what few things she had. It wasn't that she didn't have money, but just that the past few years, she'd never felt permanent enough to collect anything in the way of stuff. Who needs stuff? It's just more to move when things get messy, when it's time to go somewhere else again.

She felt queasy as she felt her way through dark hallways, not wanting to turn on any lights to wake her family. There was a churning in the pit of her stomach, and she wasn't sure why. Maybe because of everything she was about to leave behind, but would any of them even miss her? Maybe it was just nerves, like the first day of high school if high school was meant to represent her entire life. She didn't understand it, but somehow she knew this was going to be bigger than any vacation she'd taken before.

She peeked into their bedrooms, all of them asleep, her father snoring like a storm. And finally, peaceful only in her sleep, the magmatic presence that was her little sister, Bella. The world could adore her if they wanted to, but Samantha had her own life to make. She wouldn't wake her to say goodbye. She only whispered, quietly, "Bye, sis."

*******

Samantha Bradshaw, born May of 2050 in Lakeside Heights, MI. Last seen by her friend Riley Hathe on August 18, 2073, at the age of 23 years old. She has black hair and brown eyes, 5' 9" tall, athletic build, and weighs 145 pounds.

Samantha went missing ten years ago, and none of her family or friends have seen her since. It's your job to tell us what she's been doing for this time. Where did she go, and what was she doing there? Did she get married and have some kids? Did she become a street junkie? Give her any adventure you like, and then tell us about it.

The Samantha Bradshaw Project will seek out her adventures, from one place to the next. And there are only three rules:

#1, she must honor her character, and her own complete history, from one adventure to the next. There is no amnesia in this story! At the end of her stay in your town, she will suddenly feel an aching desire to move on. You have to decide why she wants to leave.

#2, she may mention or think about people from her past here in Lakeside Heights, or from any other place she travels, but she must not make any contact with anyone at home until she is 35. She may bring travelers with her from one place to the next, though she is not obligated to stay with them permanently.

#3, when she turns 35, she will suddenly feel an aching desire to finally come back home. You have to decide why she wants to come home, who is she hoping to see, or what is she hoping to accomplish by coming back home? And is she bringing anyone with her?

The girl: (download her here) let me know if anyone has trouble with the download.

CC notes: She comes with her Lakeside Heights t-shirt, some Bruno eyeshadow and Helene blush, and some super-cool jeans with Docs (can't remember who made them) which you really should have in your game anyway ;)

Of course, you can redress her any way you like (remember that she hates pink!). And keep in mind, that we're all using different default replacement sets, so she could look slightly different from one neighborhood to the next. In fact, I now remember that the lipstick she's wearing in my hood is also a default replacement, so when you get her, she might have some ridiculous color of Maxis lipstick on, lol! Anyway... She'll also probably want to change her clothes and cut her hair from time to time.

She doesn't have to walk around in that t-shirt if she doesn't want to, lol! That's just a gag. If you're wondering, her usual style was pretty simple, jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, casual, not too girly, but not sloppy either. She's girly enough to curl her hair occasionally and put on some makeup though :)

Use whatever means of cheats, hacks, objects, or SimPe to modify her personality and stats.

zodiac: Gemini (6/9/9/5/4)
aspiration: family/popularity
LTW: golden anniversary (no need to set this one, since you won't be playing her long enough to fulfill it, but just keep it in mind)
OTH: cuisine
college graduate: political science major, 3.8 GPA
last known profession: journalism, fact checker
skills: cooking 6, mechanical 4, charisma 9, body 8, logic 9, creativity 7, cleaning 5
interests: food, fashion, travel, environment, weather, sports, work, politics
disinterests: crime, animals, toys, sci-fi
turn-ons: fitness, hard worker
turn-offs: stink

Random trivia:
- her parents divorced when she was 7.
- she is the oldest of 5 cousins, but was never very close to any of them.
- childhood best friend, Riley (Nova) Hathe
- first love, Jackson Phoenix
- doesn't usually have one-night stands, but it's been known to happen
- doesn't usually sleep with married men, but that's been known to happen too
- enjoys drinking, and worked as a bartender in college
- loving, but not gushy or very affectionate - doesn't care for PDAs
- friendly and sociable, likes to cook and host parties
- emotionally unstable, tends to run away from her problems rather than dealing with them
- favorite colors, black, red, dark purple
- never EVER wears pink!
- holds an eternal contempt for blonde-haired women (because of Nessa, lol!)
- family: mother Autumn (Phillipine) Bradshaw-Bertino, father Cody Bradshaw, half-sister Bella Bradshaw.

Timeframe: Don't worry about the current year in your own neighborhood, just her current age in your story, and I'll work out the differences. If you don't normally use real-life ages or years, you can make them up in Samantha's case. Time progresses in this hood VERY slowly, and Samantha isn't due to turn 35 in Lakeside Heights until the year 2085. You should have plenty of time to work on her story, as my own story here has slowed to a crawl.

The story: You may tell her story in any tense or format you like, as long as (see rule #1) you remain true to her character and the stories that came before yours. You can even collaborate with the participants who come before or after your turn, so that one story can flow easily into the next. No need to stop what you're currently doing with your neighborhood, just work her into your story like any new character. She's like a ROS on legs :)

The stories you're writing will be flashbacks in terms of Lakeside Heights time. And as you guys are writing the stories of her adventures in the twelve years she is away, I'd like to post a couple/few interviews with my characters, in current time, about what they remember of her back when they knew her. These won't affect the stories you're writing, because none of my characters have seen her since she left. Don't think of it as confusing, lol - it's more like putting a puzzle together. It's a game! I think this is going to be fun :)

*** Note: The Samantha Bradshaw Project is currently in progress, and the official slots are all assigned. You can follow her adventures from place to place here on the master list of stories. ***

  1. This sounds like so much fun! I would love to do this, and I really don't have a time frame, begining, middle, or end. Doesn't matter. Now I have to get my thinking cap on. Did I mention I hate taking on other people's characters. ROFL

  2. Riverdale, yay! I'm glad you're on board! :)

I don't normally like taking on other characters either, but I think this is going to be a blast! I can't wait to see what all happens to her. And believe me, by the time I get her back, I'm sure she'll be nothing like the girl I sent away, lol!

  3. I'd like to sign up! I think this a fun way of exploring Samantha's character. :) Samantha would be visiting Pine Hollow/Arcadia and I don't have a preference as to beginning, middle, or end of the story. I'd like to have her make a long visit in Pine Hollow, about a year, so I can pop in on her and weave her into other updates as she comes into contact with my Sims throughout the year.

  4. Yay, Shana! That sounds perfect! I've got you signed up! :)

  5. Also, how about a means of communication for all of the participants? So we can share ideas and collaborate and ask each other questions and such, without having to clog up the comments on our actual stories?

We could do email, or a behind the scenes blog, or I think some of us are already signed up at Valley Sun Sims and we could start up a Babble thread there about it? Any other ideas?

  6. okay laura, I would definately like to join! So in preperation for joining (and I've also really wanted to do this for quite some time) I've also started a blog! I don't mean to shamelessly promote it, but here's the link.

    http://billybop428.wordpress.com/

So seeing as it's about to be up and running very soon, and I have just the idea for her, I can take her early. (but not first, lol! I don't want to be judged.)

And is about 6 months good? I figure half of a year is all I need, (and that way more people can join.) or a year if needed.

    I'm so excited!

And as for communication, I would love to talk to all the other bloggers! I think that the best idea would be to start a thread at Valley Sun sims, that way everyone knows what's going on. Unless you want it to be a surprise or want to send a private message or something! Then don't listen to me, lol.

And how do you join Valley Sun Sims? I don't want to be left out, hahaha.

thanks again Laura and everyone else I'm super excited to be doing this with you guys!

  7. Billy, yay, thanks for joining! 6 months is fine, and works especially well for near the beginning, I think. I'm thinking she might want a few short trips before she finds her footing anywhere.

Oh, and Valley Sun Sims is linked on my side bar, and you can just go over there and sign up.

All, I think I've got a method worked out for how we'll work the order of things, lol! I think we could try to steer this so that the end product makes the most sense it can.

For example, I think I'll put the more gameplay-driven bloggers near the beginning, because Samantha will be younger and more apt in life to have things happening to her rather than having the mature mindset of controlling her direction. Then later in her story, she'll be more mature, and we'll want more reflection out of her, and more motive to her actions, and the more story-focused bloggers would probably enjoy that more.

Then in terms of time, I'd like to divide up her short and long stays, like in the beginning maybe a bunch of short stays all over, because she's still finding her footing. Then maybe she decides to stay somewhere for a few years. Then a couple more short stays before she finds somewhere else she wants to stay for longer.

    Does that make sense?

On that note though, I'll also need one or two power Simmers *nudge, nudge, Carla ;)* to volunteer larger stays, like 3-5 years or something, because I think it would be unlikely that she would spend her whole twelve years moving so quickly - but that would have to be done by someone who blogs pretty quickly, while us slower bloggers will have to take the shorter stays.

Shana, you usually get through Pine Hollow pretty quickly too, would you be interested in doing 2 years instead of 1?

Anyway, this is the kind of stuff we'll discuss once we decide on means of communication and get everyone all signed up and obligated :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. I would love to join in, but I don't know if I'm a good blogger to reflect her character and everything! But I would really really love the sight up!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I wouldn't mind joining, in terms of communication-voyforums offers free forums. You don't have to sign up, just create the forum and post the link. Anyone can post.

I can get her whenever, I don't mind begining/middle/end, I don't mind a few months or years. Whatever fits in the schedule to make it all work out.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'd be happy to do 2 years! I had originally considered putting 2 years, but I didn't know if that would be too long to keep her depending on how many people sign up. But Samantha can definitely extend her stay in Pine Hollow! :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'd love to sign up for this, and I've been giving some thought to how to make it work in with starting my own blog. I'd like to start the blog with Samantha's arrival so I'm telling the story though her eyes initially, although gradually my sims take over as the main focus.

I'm definately more gameplay-driven - I'm not a writer by a long shot, my sims tell their own story through in-game and random events, and I just document it :) I'd like Samantha to stay for a year or two - it currently takes me a month to six weeks to play two sim years, although I imagine that will slow down when I have a blog to write as well.
I'd like to have her no sooner than in two months or so - I have a major thing happening in my neighbourhood and It'd work well to have her arrive in the wake of it. Anytime after that would be good, and it would actually be useful if I'm a bit ahead of it in gameplay so I have a backlog of play in case I get stuck (I can write it then tweak it for anything that happens to Samantha in her previous home)... but I don't want to leave it so long I chicken out of the blogging thing :)

  12. I just checked over at VSS, and you can post on a thread without registering if you want. I really don't feel like starting a whole forum just for this project. I think one single thread would probably be fine for us. How do you guys feel about that?

I also didn't really think about what an ideal number of participants would be. I suppose too many probably wouldn't work out very well for us. Maybe I should move up the deadline, or put a limit? I'm thinking, spread out between short and long stays, 9-12 participants would probably be ideal.

Tanja, don't be shy! We're just having fun here :) Did you want to have her for a short or a long stay? And is it SimsVille she'll be visiting?

Riverdale, you didn't mention if you'd prefer a short or long stay?

Apple, wow, thank you for being flexible, lol! That will definitely help out :)

Shana, thanks :) I figured most people would probably want to do the shorter visits, so I was worried about being able to fill out all twelve years. But we just might have a good turn out here. We've got six signed up already :)

Blackcat, cool, I think I'll make you third then, and you can have her for two years. So two shorter stays before yours, and that should take at least two months, probably.

I think 1-2 months is a good amount of time for each player to take their turn with her before she's passed on to the next story. Maybe 3 months for the really long stays?

Okay, I'm off to start us a thread then :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. A thread for us. I hope this is okay with everyone. I think a single thread will probably be plenty.

Anything we want to keep top secret we can take to private message or email :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Okay, I just added a limit of 12 official participants. I don't think it would work out having any more than that. So 6 more spots left! :)

(Man, I feel so bossy, lol!)

    ReplyDelete
  15. OK, you twisted my arm! :D I think I probably update at the most insane pace out of all of us (LOL), so Sullivan could host Samantha for a longer stay. I guess how long we each have is going to depend on how many people sign up, right?

I don't care where I'm placed, as long as I'm not first or last. ;)

Can I also say that I was totally confused as to how this was going to work? I thought you were going to send her out, have each of take her for 12 years and then decide which story fit her! Maybe that is what you said but I think this might work better.

Oooh, I'm nervous! I've never taken on anyone else's Sim before, so I hope I can do her justice.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I can't wait to see how this all pans out and the different/styles etc! Samantha Bradshaw is going to have herself one hell of an adventure. ;)

I've only traded characters once. I sent a character (lacie from BS) to one of my friends doing a prosperity, LOL. Oh, and my simself.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would be willing to take the last spot if no one else desperately wants it. ;) I really have no preference as to where I am in the list, so if no one else wants the last spot I'll volunteer for it and try my best to wrap up all the stories into one final adventure before heading home.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Carla, yay! Yes, it will depend on how many people join in, so for now I'll put you down for like 2-4 years or something :)

Yes, that was the original intention, and I'm not really sure at what point the idea evolved into the current one, but I think this one is much more doable. 12 years at anyone's pace is still a really long time, lol! So this way everyone does a smaller part of the 12 years. And I like this way better too because everybody gets to contribute to the story :)

Mao, I know, she can't say she didn't get an interesting life, I'm sure of it! :)

... but, um, I can't tell if you're signing up or not signing up? lol! ;)

Shana, yay, thanks! I was hoping somebody would volunteer for that spot :) You'll do a great job with it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, sorry, Laura! I just wanted to comment on the thing overall. I've got way too much going on to give it a shot, LOL! Sorry for the confusion. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oooh oh! Me me! Tierra de Legado would love to have her for a Season. I suppose this means I should probably actually update!

I have no preference when I'd go. But I would love to have her for a season.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes she will be stayin in SimsVille, or Upper SimsVille when she visits my hood.
I think I can have her for a year or so, maybe after Blackcat? I prefer not to be placed first or last!

  22. Samantha shall move to a small town known as Vision Valley. She moves in and sleeps on the couch of Ciccones, which she discovered are some long-distant cousins of her. She lives there while she gets a job at the local newspaper as a reporter while learning how to let go of the pass. Eventually moving to Vision City to become an editor for a small time local magazine before return back to Lakeside Heights around her 30's. She starts dating again and begins to have trust in men, realising there is someone out there that has love for her.

I thought this might be suitable for her as the family had an ROS for 'A distant relative moves in' and I like the idea of a distant cousin who is rather rebellious and a black sheep.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Kate, that sounds like it would work well for an unofficial story. That way you have complete control over her for all twelve years. If you wanted to participate in the official swap though, she could be 32 and married with four kids (or a childless street junkie, for that matter) by the time you got her - you just can't know what the players before your turn with put her through, you know ;)

So let me know whether you'll be doing the official swap, or writing your own individual story?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would love to play her but I am not signing up. I read this post today..just wanted to tell you I love the picture of Chad and the baby ... just like in real life.. and Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Sweet Avenue! Please let me know if you end up posting anything - I'd love to collect the links of all her unofficial stories too :)

I hoped you guys would enjoy those flackback pictures! And the completely gratuitous shot of baby Liza, lol! I actually aged the real Sims down and then exited without saving, so that really was Liza :)

Everyone, there are 4 slots left, and we're looking for some more shorter stays (3-6 months) at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This looks fun! Don't think I'll sign up for the official swap though, being of the "Deadlines? Pfft, I'll do it tomorrow" mindset I tend to drag my heels before doing anything (even opening sims is a game of "Well, I -could- open it or let it load, or I can watch this show and then get miffed when it's late and I haven't played sims at all").

Still, I do have an idea of what I could do with her outside of the swap, though will have to think a bit about the how's and the why's a bit before I know anything for certain (and finish playing the last household of this round and start writing things), but we'll see! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm in if there is still room for more! :)

I'm open for whatever slot, and would like it to be an average stay. Giving the timeline of my hood, probably 1 to 2 years.

Can't wait! Loved the story part, who doesn't spend time with their BFF watching people go by and talking about how life turned out! People watching and dreams seem to go hand in hand.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I just saw you only have slots for 3-6 months. I can do that too. :) Whatever is available.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Actually, I'll make it that she'll leave Vision Valley by the age of 27 so she doesn't have to hang around forever.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kate, why don't you head over to VSS and take a peek at what we're working on. Here's Samantha's "itinerary" so far, and she's about booked until she's 27 or 28 already. I could fit you in for 6 months to a year, around age 28 or 29, if you want?

Unless you want to write an individual story, and then of course you can do whatever you like with her :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. mmm I am assuming there is no Sam in sims3 version?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Speechless, there isn't yet, but I have no problem if someone wants to make her likeness in Sims 3 and give it a try. Since all of her memories would be on the storytelling level between all these neighborhoods anyway, the difference in games probably wouldn't matter.

There's still 3 slots left (6 mo. each) if you wanted to get in on it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Are those slots still available? I would like to try this out.

    ReplyDelete
  34. aas2b, sorry, we closed sign-ups for this on January 8th, and we've got the slots all planned out and scheduled already. But you're welcome to write an unofficial story about Samantha. It can span however many years you want, and we'll think of it in terms of an alternate life she might have lived ;)

Let me know if you do one, because we have a section for unofficial stories on the master list.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh wow, I'm mad late. Samantha just seemed like a good deal to start out with, since I'm writing a blog for the first time. Well, thanks. I'll find a place for "alternate" Samantha.
