more randomly materialized families, text style

This was inspired by that time I made Drew and Fenton's family (who you'll actually meet in story very soon!) and once I got started with them, I just couldn't stop! I've said before that I have a hard time reaching my characters fully until I understand where they're coming from, so family backgrounds are always a sticking point for me. These families were made from the little tidbits of story I've thrown out for them over the years, and when I compiled everything together, a real picture started to emerge.

I'd love to make all these characters as real actual Sims, but OMG, that would be impossible! So most of them will have to live in our imaginations. Though I'm sure some of them will probably end up working their way into a story some day.

Some of these places might not mean very much to people living outside the U.S., so I linked them up to Wikipedia if you feel inclined to know more.

Cameron: His parents have been married for 45 years, working-class people living in metro Detroit. Cameron is the youngest of four brothers. His dad and brothers are big fans of ice hockey, and his mother sings in the church choir. Cameron was always kind of bullied by his big brothers for being a bit of a prissy boy (which he kind of is), and we suspect that's why he grew up to have such a chip on his shoulder. Cameron is quite happy to have a house full of girls now, though sometimes he wonders how he would do with a little boy too.

Jodie and Jason: Their parents divorced when Jodie was a baby. Their dad remarried first, and brought one step-sibling and one half-sibling to the family. Their mom remarried next, bringing two more half-siblings, and three step-siblings. Blended family holidays were ridiculous and chaotic for a time, and once Jodie moved out for college, she stopped going. Even Jason stopped going soon after, and the grown children scattered around the country and meetings fizzled out. Jodie has spent holidays with her brother ever since. She considered not going this year, now that he's married and expecting a baby, because she thinks she'd feel left out. But in light of certain emotional events, she's actually changed her mind. She's even a little excited to see them. She plans on bringing a pie. Store-bought, but still.

Corbin: His parents are Raymond and Juniper "June" Gray, a hippyish and quiet couple living a little ways outside of Portland, Oregon. They've been together for about 35 years, but didn't marry until Corbin was five. Corbin is an only child. If at all possible, his father is even more reserved a man than Corbin is. His mother is a large woman who wears linen skirts and bakes organic bread. She also makes windchimes, and she sells both the bread and the windchimes at local craft shows. His dad is a carpenter, and specializes in sunrooms. Corbin calls home about once a month, plus holidays and birthdays, which he never forgets.

Piper: was born in Idaho, and moved to Lake City for college. She comes from a big, religious family (she's the second-youngest of seven!), but it was so big she felt lost in it. Piper is still fairly religious herself. Her parents have been married for 35 years. She was never very close to her mother, but she and all of her sisters are daddy's girls. She has four sisters and two brothers, and she keeps up with all of them through email and video chats. She's set up a family blog, where all her siblings can post pictures and stories of their children. She has sixteen nieces and nephews, and she can't WAIT to have one of her own!

James: Has just a dad, in Cleveland, Ohio. His mother died of cancer when he was eight. His father just remarried a few years ago. James was invited to their very small wedding, but he didn't attend. He is not currently speaking to his father.

Vicky: Declined to comment on her family.

  1. This is so cute! None of my sims have families yet because I'm on first generation none of my sims but I've spotted someone's elder-clone hanging around. Time for mom to make a surprise visit, methinks ;)

  2. I love these. I love reading their family back stories. So good! Ihope you do more. And I think out of all the parents and family, I would love to see Corbin's parents. I heart hippies. LOL

  3. Love the family history! Are you actually going to create the sims to go along with it or just have them as mentionables?

  4. When I saw that April was in the picture with Vicky, I hoped for a moment that you were finally going to explain April's family, but I feel like that's a big plot point. I'm also wondering a lot about Vicky's family.

And you're right, the families do give a lot more depth to these characters!

  5. Oh, this is very cool! It's a good idea to just have that back story that you can refer to if you need/want to, without necessarily having to make Sims to go along with them.

That is pretty much exactly the kind of family I can picture Corbin coming from as well.

Can you say why James isn't talking to his dad, or is that yet to be revealed?

  6. Zoe, thanks! Yes, older clones are fun! That's how April got her mom, lol! I found an older woman townie walking around that looks just like her.

I do actually mean for you guys to meet April's mom at some point.

Riverdale, I'd love to make Corbin's parents too! And since there's only two of them, it's more doable than say Piper's family, lol! Though wouldn't it be so awesome if all those siblings and nieces and nephews could come to her wedding? Awww, and since I said she's a daddy's girl, I'll at least have to make her daddy so he can give her away!

Uh oh, see how easy it is to get started? ;)

Rome, thanks! Not all of them, but some!

Katherine, right, the conflict between April and her mom is a large part of her story. She does have an actual mom in the neighborhood though, so you will meet her at some point.

I'm wondering about Vicky too! (= I have no clue what they're about yet, lol! I just know they're rich, and they sent her away to school here.)

Carla, I'm glad Corbin's parents fit. It's kind of like it was with Drew - he's kind of so precise a character that I couldn't imagine him having come from anywhere else, lol!

James is actually no mystery I'm planning or anything. I think both he and his father are kind of anti-social men, and James didn't like this woman he married, or didn't like the idea of her at least (I'm sure he hasn't actually spoken to her more than a handful of times in his life). He was probably 22 or 23 at the time, so still pretty young, and moody, and still reeling over Mariah too actually. It's probably one of those things where they both didn't talk for so long that it got hard for either of them to start it back up again. Now James has moved several times, so his dad wouldn't even know where to find him. Looks like it's all on James then, huh? ;)

    See, instant story, lol!

  7. Their families really do flesh them out. (I'm going to have to think about that myself!)

Corbin's attraction to Leila makes a lot more sense now too - she's quite like his mother.

I wonder with Jodie and Jason's family if there wasn't more to it than just a large and chaotic step-family. How did their parents treat them after they had all these step-sibs?

  8. Kiri, I was waiting for someone to notice that about Corbin, lol! I thought so too. Leila probably reminds him a lot of home.

Oooh, good point about Jodie and Jason's family. I'll have to think on that some more, but there could be a lot of tensions between them and the rest of the family just because they were children of the failed marriage. Very good insight there!

  9. Kiri, oh, and on the flip side, Corbin probably reminds Leila a lot of her childhood as well, since both her parents were something of scholars. Not making this any easier, I know, lol!

  10. Oo Nice! No wonder they connected! Poor Leila and Corbin, everything conspiring to make them perfect for each other. LOL
